Cat jumping on counter and stove top

My family's new cat Lockett has been settling in great. Aside from the first day where the cat jumped on everything exploring, there haven't been many problems at all. Except, he jumps up on our kitchen counter and stove top looking for food. Now this isn't sooo bad, except that if this keeps up, one day the stove will be left on and un supervised, and the cat will get it's paws burned off.

What's the best way to prevent the cat from doing this? And what should we be doing if we catch the cat on there?

There are many things to try. There is foil on the counter tops. They say cats don't like to walk on it. Well, some do and some don't.

What I used, is an aerosol can of air called Scattttttt. It is available at larger pet stores and online. It has an invisible beam that when broken, emits a burst of air.

I know some will come on and say...no it's dangerous. Well, as with anything, common sense must prevail. Do not put near or on stove as there are propellants that are flamable. Just as you wouldn't have a can of Pam on your stove. It detects up to 7 or 8 feet. Therefore, you need not put where there is flame. Depending on the size of your kitchen, it can be across the room. The burst of air does not travel far, but just the sound will startle them enough to make them think twice about jumping up again. Keep the can out of sight, so when they don't see the can, they still wont jump up. They may equate the can with the sound.

It is recommended by Drs. Foster and Smith catalog. You can get their catalog online and they have specific catalogs for cats and dogs.

Again, read the instructions. You have cooking spray in your house that should not be near flame....same thing here. Common sense. It works great and you can move it from trouble spot to trouble spot.

We do not use it anymore, because our cats have stayed off the cupboards since then....years.

Of course, we were usually the ones setting it off!!

The air can is a very good idea!
When my older cats were kittens and misbehaved, a spray with a water spray-bottle worked very well! Now all I have to do is say "Tsssst tssssst" (like the spray-bottle sounds) and they close their eyes and frown Another thing that works is a soda can filled with coins - just shake it when your cat jumps up on the counter.

Ugggg, my Mourek is very smart and never does anything bad unless I am far away...once in a while I will hear him jumping off a counter or table. Bad boy

I second the tin foil idea- my mom had to use that for her cat and it worked pretty well. Otherwise, well... kitty will learn the hard way, which we definitely don't want!

My kitten has recently started doing that too. I haven't found a solution that has worked yet so I've been shutting her in the bedroom when I'm cooking and leaving her in there until the stove is cool, better safe than sorry!

If you are the one reprimanding them for jumping on the counter, they quickly learn to do it when no one is around. So its best to try things that you can just leave there. The Ssscat is probably the best bet. And yeah, tinfoil will discourage some cats. If you check out some youtube videos, you can see other things people come up with too. Double sided tape is another thing people try or the plastic mats for carpet with the nubby things on the back.

I used the Ssscat this year to keep the cats, AND the dogs, out of the Christmas tree. It worked quite well. It also has kept 1 of my cats from jumping onto the refrigerator and then onto the ledge of my vaulted ceilings. I don't mind his climbing so much but what I'm afraid of is that he will fall and land on the porcelain floor which is incredibly hard (he is not the most graceful feline).

I don't see why the Ssscat would not work for countertops and stovetops.

I never leave my stove unsupervised when it's on. I am always in the kitchenette. (I think he doesn't like the smell of gas, he tends to stay away anyway) And when I am done cooking, I put a big plate over the hot burner, just in case my cat does step there, he won't be stepping on the burner.

I tried lots of things to keep him off the counters.. I tried the foil, I tried sticky tape (but it only got in MY way), I tried water bottles.. never tried the air can though.. something to keep in mind.

He doesn't jump much on the counter anymore.. only when it's his feeding time, he'd jump up to help me locate his kitty spoon.
