Our young cat is having her first litter... poor mite is only just over a year old... 1st one came at 7am with no reall problems... and she done well... number 2 was much harder and longer for her .. i thought it was stuck but about 1 hour later it came out .. (all well)... number 3 was directly behind... she seemed content , happy and went to eat and drink... thinking 2 hours later that it was all over went shopping and came home to number 4 all seems well,, problem is number 5 came about half hour ago at 3pm and shes bite the cord and cleaned up a little but doesmt seem interested in cleaning this kitten and she is so so exhausted... the other 4 are all over her... should i remove them to give her time with the newest one... or should i just sit helplessly by and let her be mum .....

How is it going?

The question here, is, if this kitten was deadborn mom will prob leave it be.

If she is only exhausted, it is good you do help them.

There are of course the in-between cases, the kitten very weak, but alive. If you can help, do so. They often need some extra warmth, and after it with a little luck they come alive.

Welcome to the Forums!

Good luck!

Yes you definitely step in. Make sure the kittens are warm and dry, feed them if mom isn't or you stand to lose some kitties here. A one year is way to young to have kittens and she may be overwhelmed and stressed and sometimes that stress causes bad things to happen.

Make sure the kitties are warm and fed. www.kitten-rescue.com can give you good tips. It could be mom has more kittens in her- common for outside kitties left on their own to breed and mate. Hopefully when she gets herself back together she will step in and be the mom.

There is also an excellent article by Sandie Taylor in the Health Section of the website (not the forum) about pregnant cats and kittens. Best of luck!

1 year old is really young to have kittens, but don't lose hope - your little mama will still know what to do. Our rescued kitty is only about a year old and very small, but she is doing wonderfully taking care of her 4 babies. They are a little over 2 weeks old now. The last time we had kittens, the KMR (kitten milk replacer) was really helpful if the kittens weren't nursing. We coaxed a weak kitten to lick some off our fingers and she started nursing off mom again shortly after that. Make sure mom has plenty of kitten chow and fresh water - she will need to eat a lot to keep her strength up so she can nurse. Also make sure the room where the mom & babies are staying is nice and warm. Good luck to you and your kitty family!

Now please consult with your vet and decide when it is appropriate to have her spayed, and get it done as soon as medically possible before she becomes pregnant again.
