Advice needed.

Hi TCS friends.

I went to my parent's house this evening and noticed one of their cats, 15 years old has something strange on her ear. She has had issues with her ear for a while. My mom took her to the vet on numerous occasions and the stupid vet told her first that all older cats get this in their ears, that it was normal. Then he said it was fungus...gave her some meds and drops for the ears but clearly it has not worked. I'm actually fed up with the vet we have been using for the past 10 years and have found a new vet since my last visit a week and half ago. I dont think he has a clue what he is talking about. I have made an appointment with the new vet but was hoping someone can shed a little light on this issue. Below are pictures of what her ear looks like now.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

We had to put our other 15 year old cat down yesterday due to tumors/cancer he had in one ear. My mom would be devastated if something were to happen to this cat so close together to our beloved kike's death. She is going to see the vet Monday but in the meantime id like to not worry so much.

So sorry about the loss of your other cat. I don't have a clue what this is so can't offer any advice. You did the right thing by changing vets. I'm not saying the old vet is a bad one but it's always good to get a second opinion if you're not getting any satisfaction from the first vet. Update if you have time when you find out anything from the new vet. I am very interested in what you find out. Good Luck! I've got fingers crossed.

I can't help identify the problem either, but I agree with the previous poster: even if you love your current vet, it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. Good luck to you.

Oh I'm sorry to hear this. Is the cat in the photos related (e.g. littermates) to the senior kitty put to sleep yesterday?

Thank you. They were not littermates. But Kike's ears looked way different and the bumps were inside his ear. She has them outside. I was reading it could me allergy from ear mites or flea bites. I am happy I found another vet which was highly recommended to me by a cat rescue in Miami which uses them frequently. I already recommended a friend to their offices which use to go to my previous vet and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about them. She took her dog to the new vet because imagine her dog was pregnant and they did not know it. She had been taking her dog for the past 3 weeks to the old vet and not once did he mention to her that she was pregnant. They even took out blood for various tests and nothing. The last visit she went to she asked if they can please check if she was pregnant because they had a feeling she was and they were unable to determine if she was or not. Needless to say she gave birth to 5 puppies, 2 of which apparently fell behind her dog house and 3 who were found but one died after. If she would have known she would have kept the dog inside. Additionally the last time i took one of my cats for a dental i think they gave him way too much anestisia because he was out of it for way too long in comparison to previous dentals.

Needless to say im glad i found another vet. Ill keep you guys posted once i find out what Xuxa has on her ear. Im personally taking her in as one of my mother's day presents to my mom. Plus I want to know exactly what it is!

Above is a pic of Xuxa. My mom could not wait until Monday and took her in once she was out of work. Conclusion her previous vet is an idiot and it looks like he might have misdiagnosed our poor Kike. It seems to me Kike started with the same symptoms. However, the vet told my mom it was cancer and that there was nothing we could do. At no time did he ever run any test to check if it was cancer. Unfortunately my mom trusted him since he had been our vet for soooo many years.

Honestly if not for this site, i probably would have never started doubting our vet. I've read so many different things on this site and have learned so much that i began to doubt his knowledge. Sadly it was to late for our Kike and we will never really know what could have happened if we would have taken him elsewhere but at least there is hope for Xuxa.

My mom was very content with the new vet and his staff and she will be using him from now on!

In the end what Xuxa has are small benign tumors that were somewhat blocking her ear canal and caused an infection. He took her to the back of the hospital put her under light anesthesia and did a full cleaning/scraping of her ear. He shaved her hair around her ear and removed some of the bumps on her outer ear. On monday my mom has to drop her off so they can remove 3 small bumps inside her ear. He gave her some meds to help reduce the abscess and a little cone so she doesnt hurt her ear.

Thank you everyone who posts on TCS!!

I am so glad to hear that they are benign, especially knowing that you lost your other little guy so recently to cancer. I'm sure Xuxa is hating that cone right now, but I bet she'll feel better after those tumors are removed!

Oh dear, I am sorry about Kike and I remember you posting about Kike recently too. I am so thankful you took Xuxa (what a name) to another vet and that all will be well with your cat now. Some vets, well, should not be practicing ...... Lots of healing vibes to Xuxa

Xuxa will be PTS tomorrow morning. Things went downhill after they burned off the tumors which ended up being cancerous and it has come to a point she has to wear the cone all day everyday. The tumors are about nickel sized and tonight my mom called me to tell me some had popped and she was bleeding for a while. Poor girl weighs about 4 pounds. My mom always calls me for advice and I agreed with her that it was time to put poor Xuxa out of her misery and let her play over the rainbow bridge with Kike who was PTS for a similar issue not so long ago. My mom is distraught as this was her baby who slept with her and was always by her side.
