I am so angry right now I swear I couls spit bullets. Today our company announced its new strategy, which includes a new name. There was a "Name the Company" contest and the winner is supposed to get $100 and recognition for the name. Well last year I submitted a few names for a "Name that Process" contest and won. But then they ended up not using it because we dropped that process. Well guess what the new name of the company is?? You guessed it! My suggestion. And the HR director (who is a "B" and I can't stand) is taking credit for it. Almost everyone here knows it was my name and she's claiming it as hers.

Oh, I would be mad too. But if everyone knows it is your idea, you can take the high road, and just let people know -"Oh, isn't it sad that she feels the need to take credit for my idea....". But not getting the prize money, that really sucks.

Don't you just love working for companies? This type of stuff makes me nuts! And it happens all the time. When I was working for Donnelley, I was out of the main office working at a branch office tracking marketing results of a new campaign. One day while out to lunch when I came back, one of the sales reps approached me to tell me that someone from the main office had come in and prowled around my desk *taken something* and left. I went in and looked and didn't see anything out of the ordinary missing.

The next main meeting at the main branch, imagine my surprise when a fellow editor got praised for designing a new type of marketing form- it was MY form that I had designed specifically for my campaign! I was so stunned and ticked off- and talked to the District Manager afterward who had to go to bat for me and tell them that this was my idea and form-

I just sent a letter to our new CEO that read like this:

Hi Tom,

I'm sure you are very busy and I appologize for the email but I was suprised today when I heard the new name of the company! That was a name I chose last year for a process. It was chosen but then never used for the process it was meant for. My original suggestions were Prolexion (pro-lex-ee-on), Prolexion (pro-lex-shun) and Prolex. And when they did a search to see if the name was taken, we discussed that it may have to change to something like Prolexy. I'm glad I could contribute something to the company!

We'll see if I hear anything. He is a real down to earth guy.

Sorry to hear that, does she not remember who won the contest?
Really, you have those kinda people in any place you work, the ones with a brown nose
Yeah, she knows. My manager is pissed. He went to talk to her but she claims amnesia. In the letter I sent to the CEO I also forwarded her email to me congratulating me and acknowledging the name from last year.

This, one comment, is brilliant! That is what I call taking the high road.

Ahhhhh, one of THEM! I don't know why, but people like that always get into managerial positions and they shouldn't be. They can't do any of the work, but they claim all the work of their subordinates.

BLECH!

EXACTLY! This woman is the devil incarnate! And she is a control freak too. Once the acting CEO asked me to organize potlucks every two months to raise morale (because I had a couple of very sucessful ones). Well I did and all of a sudden in December this lady emailed me and informed me that I needed to go through her to have a potluck and that I needed to come down to her office to "chat about including others." I appologized and explained that I had never worked anywhere where you had to ok a lunch time potluck with the human resources director. Especially when the ceo asked you to do it!

Why do people like that always get the good jobs? Oh yeah, cause they steal other people's ideas. What a b----! Some people have no sense of shame or working to get where they want to be. Too bad you have to deal with her, at least you saved her email. Maybe that will get you the recognition and the money.

YOU GO GIRL!!!!! I think your e-mail was perfect, and having a copy of the congratulatory e-mail is the icing on the cake. I never delete any work-related e-mails.

Now, of course, in the industry I'm in it's been regulated... a copy of everything I write and receive is copied to the company's server and kept for 7 years (even from my home computer - but only from the "work" address on my home computer). In the office, our phonecalls are also recorded and kept for 7 years. Thank god I work mostly from home!

...but I really wanted to add -

Thanks everyone, for your support! Yesterday I was so upset about this. And I went home with the crapiest attitude!
I still haven't heard anything but if I do, I will let you know.
