Need help PLS :(

So a while ago we got a new kitty, and he had turned out to be very aggresive, spraying everywhere, scratching.. after trying everything we had to get rid of him- we couldn't have that around our new baby.

We finally, after waiting a long time, have decided to take the plunge and get another cat. Our son loves kittens and cats and we do also. We went to pound and ended up with two kitties, both around a year old. One is a boy and one is a girl. They were both in "colonies" at the shelter, and after making sure at the pound that they were okay with each other and okay with Caleb, we decided to adopt them both.

Since they've been home I've made sure to give them equal attention. The first day was great- no issues. Yesterday was no issues either until we all went out of the house for a couple of hours. We came home and I immediately smelled the cat spray. I know the difference, because of the issues we had with the other cat..

We know it was the male cat because he has been the only one roaming the house. He is very skittish, but also calm.. (hard to explain) and we saw him go into our bedroom once, whereas the other kitty has never roamed out of our living room. Both cats are very lazy, cuddly, and sweet..

Last night I had gotten so mad after finding spray in 3 separate, places after only one day.. I told my husband we are bringing him back to the pound today. But I was just upset.. I really want it make this work, I already love hi to death, but after the issues with our last cat I can;t bare to try everything and anything to make it stop only to have to get rid of him. We just can't have the spraying around our toddler.

So my question, could this have maybe, hopefully been a one time thing? All day today he's been lounging on the couch again.. he gets along great with our other cat and cuddles her all day long. He hasn't sprayed again since this incident. Could he have been maybe roaming and marking his territory in this new place, and maybe it won't happen again??

Does that even happen?

Please help I love them both so much already but I just don't know what to do!!

OH, and also idk if this is relevant but the boy is fixed, and the girl is not- she's got kitty cold and we're waiting for it to pass.

It's possible the boy smelled your previous cat. It may be time for some very thorough cleaning.

Alternately, as much as I hate to suggest it, take him back and either trade him for a female, or just keep the one female.

i'm sorry to sound so n00bie, but what's spraying? do you mean peeing?

It is likely that the new cat smells the urine from the former cat, but did you ever try to find out why the other cat avoided the litter box? There's a good chance he was sick.

You need to get an enzymatic cleaner and soak the house, to remove all scent of cat urine. Even if you can't smell it the cats can.

Installing some feliway plug in diffusers can help with territorial issues, also.

He's not avoiding the litter box, he's actually using it great.. he's not peeing outside the box, just spraying. And I'm sorry I forgot to mention it's been a while since our former cat, we've moved since then.. and the places new kitty has sprayed on our other cat never was on, we've gotten new furniture (new cat sprayed on couch), new blanket (new cat sprayed on blanket), etc. I'm going out for about 1 1/2 hours tonight so I was gonna give it another test run to see if he does it again. He seems very shaken up when you pet him and he doesn't see it coming.. Idk if maybe this is an anxiety issue or not, but I just can't bring myself to bring another kitty to the pound without at least trying for a bit- it's so hard after I just brought him home

Can I get the cleaner and plug in's at say, walmart or target, or just at pet stores? I'm gonna have to look either tonight or tomorrow if it really does work..
