Hello all. New to this forum and so glad to have found it. I have 5 cats, and one is a 6 wk. old kitten.
Fed the kitten from about 1 wk. by syringe. He is now eating canned kitten food mixed with infant rice cereal and water. He was doing great; urinating, drinking water, having normal bowel movements, and very playful. Three days ago, I noticed both third eyelids showing in both inside corners of one of my other cats. I took her to the vet, whom I trust completely, and he said she could have an infection of some kind and put her on antibiotics. Now, one of my other cats' eyes are beginning to show the same signs. In the meantime, the kitten has now began to have diarrhea. He has been unable to control it at times and tends to "leak" at any given moment, in any given area. I contacted my vet about this too, and he has given me two kinds of worm medications which I have been giving him. One is "Pyrantel Pamoate" (two doses 14 days apart) and the other is "Albon" (once a day). I have been giving him these medications and he is still having diarrhea. He is eating well though, and drinking water. He has NOT passed any worms as of yet. Now, he also has begun to show the third eyelid membrane in the inside corners of both his eyes. Whatever this is seems to be contagious and I am terribly concerned. I am worried that it is only a matter of time before my other two cats begin to show symptoms in their eyes. Have any of you experienced anything like this? Any help you may have would be greatly appreciated!

So sorry no one has answered you until now! Are you using clay litter by chance? For kittens it is recommended because they tend to EAT (yuck) from their paws clumping litter when they are as young as they are. A piece or two may have gotten flipped into the kitties' eyes as debris is a main factor for the third eyelid coming up. It's definitely not contageous.

Have you tried Sterile Eye Irrigation Solution? As long as that is the only ingredient, you can buy it at your local pharmacy (it will be more expensive than buying in bulk like I do on line for my lifer who had double eye surgery, but it will rule out debris).

What color are the third eyelids? Are the whites of their eyes white or pink?
Is the third eyelid inflamed and red? (A sign of "Cherry Eye" which is fixable)

The diarrhea could easily be caused by stress. If the diarrhea has continued constitently more than a couple days, then your cat(s) may need supplemental fluids. If you are on the "forced budget" program like I am, I would, if your cat(s) are dehydrated), let your vet show you how to give subcutaneous fluids (Sub-Q) and make sure you got it down (I've been doing it for 2 or 3 years now with my hypercalcemic girl so she doesn't go into kidney failure. If I stopped for one week, the toxins would stay in her body enough to give her kidney disease).

ANYways (sorry for the tangent), if fluids will be needed for any amount of time, have them write you a prescription for them (how ever many they expect you will need) and get them at Costco (I get all my cats' meds there now)

For temporary diarrhea I use Kaolin-Pectin which I always keep on hand just in case. It contains ONLY Kaolin and Pectin. Store products contain other ingredients that are harmful for your babies. You can buy this on line for cheap.

To check if your cat(s) are dehydrated from diarrhea, pull up gently some skin on their back (not neck; it's not reliable), and then drop. If it takes more than a second for the skin to drop down (it should just pop down), then your cat(s) is/are dehydrated; if it stays up, rush them to the vet to get fluids. Dehydration is a very quick killer and I know that sounds harsh, but truth and saving your babies is more important right now. Consistent diarrhea is very dangerous.

p.s. At costco, I buy a box of 12 1,000 Ml bags of fluids for $22.00-ish. When you see how much a vet will charge for 1 bag, you will see what a phenomenol deal this is.

Try the Sterile eye solution in the eyes, too! You can use a bit of force in the squeeze on the bottle - you're trying to get debris out if it's in there somewhere. (Especially if the vet didn't meander around in there; and many won't because there are special Vet Opthamologists that do that). I've observed her very carefully and have had to start doing some of the things she does for my kitty who had the surgery (born with no upper eyelids (upper eyelied agenesis, they had to take skin/fur from bottom and make upper eyelids with that... OWCH), but I have to pluck the little bugger eyelashes that start to grow downward - it's the most nerve-wracking thing - like surgery. I treat it like that, too!

Ack! If you need further information on any of this, please do let me know. I dispense a lot of meds to my 6 special needs cats (and have 4 others). I'm also red cross certified in dog and cat emergency first aid.

Again, so sorry no one answered you before now!!

Also, W*E*L*C*O*M*E *** T*O *** T*H*E *** S*I*T*E *!*!*!*!*!*!*!

Warmly,

Julie O'
