Hello, I'm Shannon aka PurrrrfectMomma I've been surfing around the web for a new type of forum type since my fiance' and I just recently adopted our very first set of fur babies a week as of tomorrow.

We tend to work opposite schedules and when I'm home I get extremely lonely. Long story and personal drama. And I kept telling DF that I probably would do better with a companion for when he's at work and I get to feeling extremely down. Well we've been talking about getting a cat for a few months. Then at the end of March I flew to PA for my vacation and to see my children. When I came back DF and I started talking about a cat again and also a baby. Well I'm all for a baby, but I'm 37 and he's 55, not that our age matters much but it's my kids and his we don't want to upset by thinking they've been replaced by another human baby. So we started talking more about the cat.

I of course wanted a kitten. You know so that way we could bond with it better and raise it from baby stage. Well wouldn't you know DF didn't necessarily want a kitten per say. He said what about all the other babies who are a little older that everyone always passes by because they aren't little. Well I immediately got on the defensive and pouted stomping my foot, I wanted a baby to raise not a cat I'd get attached to and then not live long, or come with bad habits we couldn't break.

So I took DF to work, and since we knew we were going to adopt from a shelter anyway I'd go have a look see. Well of course I fell in love with a couple who ranged in age from 1.5 years to 2 and figured you know what a baby that old/young I could still be happy with, so I was set. Found two (lol I managed to convince DF if we could get two during our little spat...lol) that I just thought would be perfect. But here's the kicker, we weren't ready...had nothing nor the deposit paid for our apartment pet fee. And not to mention an adoptathon was coming up and I just knew that the two babies I fell in love with wouldn't be there when I was ready....it'd be to late.

Two days later, DF and I went to the shelter to just look around after me telling him who I'd found and about the adoptathon and so forth and so on. As we where looking we saw this one baby, curled up hiding in her cage, you might as well call it her prison and she immediately stole my heart. Her story begins like this...she's 5 and she's never been adopted, she's lived in a cage her entire life being passed over because as she gets older she's passed up even more. She came to the shelter we found her at because she came from another in such a small community that they only have maybe 3 adoptions a year. She was scared to death and just crouched back into the cages corner as far as she could go, again probably thinking....yup, another starer, you won't want me, I'm 5.

Well as I'm find out about her story DF says to me, see this is what I mean. She keeps being passed over because she's 5 and she's a black tortoise so to some, she's not pretty.

DF also found an orange and white tabby who's 3 who also came from the previous shelter that the 5 year old was from, and just loved him because he's so huge and is just as simple and funny as the day is long. DF said the tabby he was looking at reminded him of a previous cat of his.

Well as he's looking at this tabby, I keep going back to her and she's so frightened. I asked the girl at the shelter can she even be touched and how much has she infact been handled only to find out she's been touched very little and that prison cell she's in is all she's known.

So we leave. And later that night as we're crunching numbers and talking about if we wanted to we really could get 2 now, but who. And I went back to the 5 year old black tortoise who's only known a cage and cried saying if we didn't adopt her she'd die in that cage. I had no hope that this adoptathon would provide her with a forever family. Now his simpleton tabby surely would be adopted, but not her.

So the next day, before the shelter opened we were there, check in hand, I'd already gone and talked to the apartment manager and told them the entire story and made arrangements on the deposit. In less than 20 minutes that 5 year old that had been passed over for years was ours and that 3 year old tabby he loved was ours too. And we brought them home.

The week has been fairly easy, she hid most of the first day but 6 days later she's done very well and is extremely affectionate. We named her Gypsy. Our 3 year old boy we left his name alone and he's Harvey. They both have been a great addition to our home and have made a wonderful transition from cages, to a bed, sofa, carpeted floor, or a warm loving lap.

I went from pouting and wanting a kitten only, to feeling like I did something remarkable and really made a difference in one cats life in particular....but I know I made a significant difference in both.

Here is our Gypsy, but you might as well call her mine

And here is our Harvey

Gypsy & Harvey are both GORGEOUS!
Thank you SO much for adopting them hun! I foster for the local shelter and it is always the older adults who get passed over. Sounds like these guys chose you! Hope you enjoy your time here at TCS.

what a great story! Sounds like Gypsy has taken a shine to you! When I am ready to get a second cat, I want a "middle aged" cat like Gypsy to give them a chance too.

Adopting two older cats, especially Gypsy has been a extremely rewarding experience. She now meets me in the living room when I come home at night, well they both do and needless to say followed me into the bathroom, well we'll just say barged in as I was using my own litterbox...lol

I had no idea that cats would be kept in a shelter for 5 years. That made me cry. Thank you so much for adopting these two.
