I'm feeding my 8 wk old kitten the Kitten Chow by Eukanuba and added a tiny bit of wet food on top of it. Later that day she vomited a little bit. It was mostly water with a couple pieces of the wet food.

Should kittens not eat cat canned foods?

Thats old enough for solid food, and no there is nothing wrong w/ wet. That is somewhat young for adoption though so kitty may have just been fully weened.

Perhaps bitty kitty just ate a bit much at once.

For the little munchkins, it was recommended to me to leave dry kitten kibble available for grazing at all times, and wet fed 3-4 times a day just small amounts. Frequent small meals makes for less likely puking episodes, and lets em grow up big.

Actually you should be making the 2-3 main meals CANNED food with some dry on the side to nibble on. Canned is a lot better for your kitten. And I would switch to higher quality foods too - Purina is not the best.

You should look into Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Merrick, Royal Canin and Max Cat for higher quality foods.

Stay away from fish based foods and feed mainly chicken, beef or lamb.

To add another opinion on here:

IMO it is best to feed kittens 3-5 meals per day, all they can eat, and not leave food out in between. All wet food or a properly balanced raw diet is best. I personally avoid dry food like the plague...I find no reason to feed something that is bad for them. And to those who are going to say that dry food is really not that bad, go ahead, but it ain't gonna change my mind

are all good sites to read through.

It's getting harder and harder to find a good brand of canned food. It seems like every company has something wrong with them...best to do your own research before trusting a company. http://www.petfooddirect.com/Search/...at/Form/Canned should bring you to a site that has a list of grain free canned. http://ibdkitties.net/CommercialFood.html also has a list of foods good for IBD cats, though it is a good list to referance because it has a list grain/dairy/certain herb free foods.

Thanks for all the replies! I will do some research on canned foods.

Also, any opinions on Science Diet? I got a couple of bags when I adopted two other cats (but then took them back because they were not compatible with each other/bad temperment) from the Humane Society.

There's a lot of words to describe Science Diet, but they are all ultimately synonyms of "poop".

And if you want to google opinions, search "free feeding". Right or wrong, its quite the norm for kittens as you really can't overfeed them while they are young and growing. Mine were free fed as kittens, and they are shiny, healthy, not overweight, and no urinary or other issues. Only had an issue w/ diarrhea for Buttercup on one of her dry foods (think it was an ingredient she didn't tolerate as was fine on three other kibbles to date). But we all agree I think that kitties should be getting wet too, as it helps hydration.

Hi Kim! Go ahead and do your research. You need to find something you are comfortable with and that is good for you kitten. With my kittens I free fed dry food and gave them small portions of wet food 5 times a day. It sounds like maybe your kitten ate a bunch of food too fast. Stretch the feedings out a bit until the kitten gets older. As adults, I still free feed them dry but give the wet only twice a day. Among the premium foods listed by other members I can recommend Nutro Max wet and dry kitten formulas and Nutro Natural Choice wet and dry formulas. My cats have done well on both of them. I never comment on brands of foods other than Nutro but as you can see, other forum members have given their opinion of Science Diet. Congrats on the new kitty!

Yeah, this is Science Diet Indoor cat formula's main ingredients:
"Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Gluten Meal, Brewers Rice, Whole Grain Corn, Animal Fat, Powdered Cellulose, Chicken Liver Flavor, Lactic Acid, Soybean Oil, Soybean Mill Run, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Calcium Sulfate, Calcium Carbonate, Iodized Salt"

Instead of chicken meal, its byproduct as a primary source. Secondary is less expensive corn gluten instead of a meat protein. Third is not just rice, but brewers rice (aka no nutrient byproduct rice), corn which is not only high carb but a common allergen for many cats, not chicken liver but just flavor... bah!

So 40% of the calories are from carbs which is high, and it has almost no fat, also bad.

I can't really recommend dry food, because I, personally, don't consider it to be cat food

Most of the grain free wet is good. For example: EVO, Nature's Variety Instinct, Before Grain, Wellness, Wellness CORE, Back to Basics, Go! Natural, By Nature, and Pet Guard. Higher end stores sell most of these brands, though you can find some of them, at Petco.

thanks for the links!!! I appreciate the one about IBD cats and diets.

I would definitely feed a high quality wet food to your kitten and 4 small meals a day. EVO, Instinct, Wellness and the ones I feed my older kittens. They are more pricey but you don't need to feed as much of it.
