Very sick kitten

Hi All, I recently bought home a 6 month old kitten. He was really lively and playfull and healthy looking. Approximatly 2 weeks ago I noticed he was acting a bit less playful, but assumed this might be down to now being used to the house. Then last Thursday I came home from a 4 day business trip and immeadiatly noticed he was acting very differently.

He was very quiet and lethargic, when I picked him up I could see he had lost a lot of weight. He was sleeping all day and not interested in anything. I called the vet who came over and gave him a vitamin and anti-immflamatory shot as well as prescribing a weeks antibiotics. After one day watching him he wasnt eating but still drinking but refused to move from the sofa. On the second day I decided to assist feed him a little kitten food with a syringe. On the third day he was starting to get wobbly in his back legs, still not eating, not pooing but drinking and urinating. By the end of the 3rd day I decided to take him into the vet so he could recieve more care.

They have now had him since Sunday. On Monday they gave him an IV, antibiotic injection and said he was acting a bit better, however today they told me his back legs are still not strong and that they have continued the antibiotics and vitamins. I have asked them to take blood tests today as they decided it maybe due to inbreeding, however I am not convinced an inbreeding problem would occur so quickly. I dont have any other options for vets as I am in Indonesia. Does anyone have any ideas on what it could be and what I can push the vet to do next?

My cat, Peanut, also suffers from weakness in his back legs as well as some other issues. He's a happy, healthy boy who just... can't jump. He also will try to rub against you as cats do and he'll hit you hard and bounce right off. My vet has no idea what caused it, either- he thinks a virus caught early in kittenhood or perhaps an injury of some sort (stepped on/booted by a horse). I can't offer much help other than the fact that if that's all that's wrong, your kitty will still be a happy one- and he'll stay off the counters.

General weakness usually show itself in the back legs first, so it might not have anything to do with his legs at all. He might just be weak from not eating. Has the vet managed to get any food into him? Using a stomach tube or whatever? He really needs to eat something, IV vitamins just won't be enough.

The blood tests are a good idea. Especially make sure they test his kidney and liver values.

So, they are doing bloods?

Thanks for the replies. Yes, they ran bloods yesterday and have been syringe feeding him as well. Im just really worried about the competance of the vet, but as I mentioned I have no other options. Especially when she mentioned in-breeding as that sounds to me like they have given up already. I am going to go see him again today and see if the results of the blood tests are back. Hopefully he will come home soon, really missing him.

How's he doing today? Have you been able to see him? Is there another vet in your area that you'd trust better?

You say you where away for 4 days? Was anyone at home with the kitten while you where gone? Could the kitten of ate something, house plants anything that could of poisoned him?

Hi all, so I just recieved a message from the vet, because of the language barrier this is all I have from her.

Cat is still not eating himself so she is feeding him. Result from blood test is high monocyte so they have diagnosed chronic infection. She says this is FIP from corona virus and that she has given him all the medicine but today he is only a little bit better.

Does anyone have any ideas where to go from here? I hear FIP is incurable, do I go with her diagnosis and if so does he have to be put down? Or do I ask her to keep treating him hoping it is a different infection?

He has had no diarrhea, but suffered from weight loss, lethargy and not eating.

I have no experience with FIP, but here's a recent post about it. There are several really good links in the posts.
