I went to go feed the foster kittens, and I thought one of them was dead!
He was just laying there lifeless, with his eyes half open and no movement. When I went to pick him up he wasn't moving, and was just limp. I shook him a little to see if I could get a reaction, and he moved his tail a little and started coming around. It totally freaked me out! I've never seen anything like it before in my life. He's just fine now, and running around and playing as usual - thank God!

What on earth could have happened to him to make him seem like he was dead?
Do kittens sleep so soundly sometimes that they appear to be dead?
I've never seen a kitten react that way. What could it be? I'm totally baffled.
Any ideas?

He was probably just asleep. When cats go into "total sleep," they can very much look dead.

I had a similar experience when we were driving from Texas to Pennsylvania with our first cat for my first job. I looked down, and he looked dead. Shook him, and nothing. Almost wrecked the car in a panic. Then he woke up, gave me that "Do you have to do that?" look, and made me feel really stupid.

was he in a deep sleep perhaps?

was he breathing?

how old is he?

I'm guessing you've already contacted a vet to be reassured, and/or have an appointment to have him checkout out.

Benji was about a week old and did something similar. I rubbed him till he came fully out of it. Being he was so young my vet did not want to see him as there was the litter at home(no mom) he never had any trouble like that again tho.

My heart murmur kitten sleeps soundly at times and ALWAYS worries me.

He is ok

He must have been in a totally deep sleep, since he's okay now. I didn't think he was breathing at first, but after looking more closely I could see that he was. I'm not sure how old the kittens are: I got them after some
dumped them off at the local dollar store.
I'd say they're about 5 weeks old now.
Here's a pic of them that I took today:

Ferrets sleep like that, especially when they're young. So do puppies and kittens, I've noticed. If you find them in a deep sleep like that, it's scary! Glad to hear he's fine.

Some people have no brains!!
Gotta tell you - they are so cute, I could just give them a big hug!! They get the Cuteness Vote from me!!

They're eyes are still blue - not sure how old they are when the color changes (if it does).

You are so blessed - I wish for you all the energy you need to care for them.
I'm sure you'll be able to find loving homes for these precious beings.

I remember when Sadie was a puppy, she would go into that deep sleep often and it always scare me because I thought she was dead. She STILL does it sometimes and she's almost 4 1/2.

I had the same thing happen to me. We have a 3 week old kitten and we thought it was dying. Very limp, breathing very faint, fast heart beat, but it was awake and running around the next morning and ready to eat. I have never seen a kitten sleep in a coma like way.
