Hi,

I have never had a dental done on an animal before, but had my cats teeth cleaned on Friday. She has gas, not IV anesthesia, and was also given an antibiotic injection, drontal for tape worm, and pain medication ketofin). She was not herself the fist day, obviously, and now she had loose stools (diarrhea), and she threw up once (orange and a bit or two of food mixed in). Now, I was aware that de wormers sometimes do this, but I hate that I am so worried. She is not lethargic, and even plays a bit. It has only been two days since her surgery and the de worming medication, etc., and was hoping someone would be able to tell me de worming meds, and how long this may last? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Hi there, I am sorry I didn't see this before! How is your kitty? Sorry to ask, but have you been to this vet before? Is this your regular vet? I am just wondering because I don't understand the need of deworming the kitty at the same time as the dental IMHO was just an unnecessary stress on on your girl. Also, I would question the ketofen for pain medication, as it can affect the kidneys. Buprenex IMHO is a far safer choice... Ketofen can also cause vomit, diarrhea and loss of appetite, putting even more post op stress on her little body.
IMO, I would just stop it - my vets tell me to give pain killer for a couple of days only - UNLESS they have had extractions, then depending on what tooth/teeth, how many and what was involved, I will give it for longer, but to me, less is more when it comes to pain meds - I play it by ear.
I hope she is doing better..... and IMHO I would think about this vet... these two choices that were made on this dental kind of raise a red flag to me.... But I am picking up on little information only, and it is just my opinion...

Thanks.
You're a vet I presume? I just assume, as you are telling me that this vet, and yes it is my regular vet, is bad and I should rethink them because of the pain med (I only gave it to her for two days), and deworming her. I am curious...

THANKS AGAIN!

I have never seen worming meds cause any problems.

My cat has had several lots of tooth extractions due to a gun disease. Each time, she was shaky on her feet for a day or two, but then fine.

If your cat has diarrhoea & sickness you really should be referring to the vet who carried out the op.
