New Members - Pictures - Repulsive Private Parts

I get RSS feeds from TCS. Recently I've received two revolting pictures from "new member" - one was a picture of oral sex, another was a picture of a young man and his private part.

There's no warning - boom, there it is!

I know the moderators are catching them - but, really -- by the time I get it it's too late for me.

Maybe the rules for posting pictures could be evaluated - like someone needs to post more than one or two threads when they are new to the website??

REALLY, this is so repulsive - I feel so violated!

If nothing can be done, then, I guess my next step would be to discontinue the RSS feeds - which is an unhappy solution for me, I assure you.

The pictures in question were caught quite quickly by the moderating team and dealt with, personally i dont think there is any need to redescribe the pictures and if you had this much of a problem you could of pm'd a member of the admin/moderatng team

I will however pass on your feedback

Thanks for the reply.

Regarding the first picture, I did email "katachtig", who was able to get back to me. It was good to find out that when I clicked on the "Read More" link and received the "no access" message, that the issues had already been handled. (I had tried to follow the link so I could report it.)

I guess my problem is that the obscene stuff was already in my mailbox.

When I got today's picture I saw that it was a new member, and so I thought a solution might be limiting a new member's ability to post pictures which would help eliminate the troublemaker from signing up and making a hit and run obscene post/picture.

I do realize that there are probably other things to consider before changing the rules - just let me know if something else will be tried or not - if not, I'll just delete my RSS feeds - cause - really - really - I do not want to see these pictures - I don't know how to get them erased from my mind - not to even speak to the issue of the younger members being exposed to this type of porn.

I usually feel safe in this website - guess I let my guard down a little too much.

I'm grateful for all the moderators and the hard work they do.

All new members are presented with the rules when they sign up. As much as we monitor the site, there are people out there who will ignore the rules of the forum to post their spam or porn. We remove these posts as soon as possible then ban the members.

I believe we have the appropriate measures in place and do not need to add additional notices.

I guess I wasn't thinking about Notices to new members that actually care about this website.

I was thinking about the people that have too much time on their hands, or a game they're playing that includes interrupting a Family website and causing a form of pain to its valuable members. These demented people don't care about adhering to website rules, or if they get banned - they know they'll get banned, it's not a matter of IF, but when.

If TCS makes it easy for them to post their porn as soon as they sign up - then I'm sure they just laugh because it's so easy to cause havoc, and make more work for moderators as well as insult the members.

So, if TCS can make it more difficult for unsavory people to post the porn pics - without causing a problem for true members to participate, it would be great.

For Example:
I was thinking that -- at the new member level -- there would be something like a restriction on posting photos - that the new member would be required to make several posts before they could post a picture. (?)

Maybe a restriction like this would discourage a troublemaker?

Just a thought - maybe it's an "old thought", if not, I hope the idea is not too much trouble to consider.

I still dont get why you felt the need to bring this to everyones attention which IMO is causng just as much havoc for the site and its members because you have described what the pictures were.

Oh and no I dont think that making a member have a certain amount of posts before you can post a picture would work because it takes away the right for the genuine people posting in the intro forum to post a picture of their cat/s and where is the fun in that? Ive watched that sort of thing kill off forums my own included (I own and ran car modifing forum)

Also what you get are ones that post links to even worse things so please count yourself lucky you didnt come across them ones, and you do know theres a report button if you dont think a topic or post is relevant to the site that flags it straight up for the moderator quicker than a private message as reporting flags it to all the mods and admin

- that can't be emphasized enough.

AJ said it perfectly about hitting the report button. Theres a lot of threads we catch without members even seeing them, and while the porn pics are bad be thankful you never have to endure the animal cruelty pictures and videos that we've had to see, because those are pictures that are still etched on our brains for months/years later.

Susan, tell me about it! I haven't been admin for years and years here, but there are still two images posted long ago that haunt me to this day.

Original Poster, please know that ALL the mods do a Bang- up job policing these forums which is in itself a minor miracle because all of them do it on a volunteer basis and they have a life too- they catch so much stuff and if it offends you so badly, cancel the Rss feed and just come here and read at will. Hit New Posts like most people and catch up on the latest posts or send PM's to your friends. Be part of the community up close and purrsonal.

I thought I was posting in a more private location, and to the moderators - My intentions are/were meant to be helpful.

I have not described - nearly - the pictures that were forced on me, I am terribly upset that I saw them.

Again, I didn't try to bring to EVERYONE's attention, but to a select few AND I was attempting to offer a suggestion - now I deeply regret it!

Okay, thanks - As I said before IF the suggestion was too much of a problem, I get it, and I'll simply delete my RSS FEEDS.

Please allow me to refer you back to my original post in this thread.

I said that the offensive picture arrived IN my Mailbox, IN an RSS FEED - there was no opportunity to press a REPORT BUTTON, I've said this repeatedly. I was trying to be very clear, what the problem was and offered a suggested solution.

I sincerely, sincerely, don't want to make more work for our dedicated volunteer moderators!!, that was never my intent. If I have done this, I very much apologize.

I have learned a lesson - I am sad that my suggestions have been a problem.

I never tried to discount all the labor that our moderators perform - I am fully aware and appreciate how this website is protected, and I highly value his/her service to this community.

Yes, I am very sensitive to certain materials - I'm not a hard-hearted person, I am grateful, oh so very grateful (!) that I am prevented in viewing the animal cruelty pictures.

When you said that you'd pass on my feedback I was encouraged that my idea would at least get a hearing.

My posts thereafter were responses to the others posting in this thread, and my attempt to explain myself - just as this post is attempting to do.

Again, I am so sorry for the apparent lack of judgement on my part, and for all the unintentional "havoc" I've caused, it won't happen again.

Or just unsubscribe ?

I don't use RSS for precisely that reason: it is just not synchronized with the removal of threads that is done on the actual forums. How much trouble it would be for the feed to be slowed so to speak in terms of keeping up with posts I have no idea. I'm also guessing email could grab "spammer" threads similar to ones in this forum and not recognize it differently than any other thread.

What is an RSS Feed?

I was wondering too, here is from Wikipedia:

"RSS (most commonly expanded as Really Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format.[2] An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed",[3] or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship. Web feeds benefit publishers by letting them syndicate content automatically. They benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one place. RSS feeds can be read using software called an "RSS reader", "feed reader", or "aggregator", which can be web-based, desktop-based, or mobile-device-based. A standardized XML file format allows the information to be published once and viewed by many different programs. The user subscribes to a feed by entering into the reader the feed's URI or by clicking a feed icon in a web browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds. RSS allows users to avoid manually inspecting all of the websites they are interested in, and instead subscribe to websites such that all new content is pushed onto their browsers when it becomes available..."

Usually I find the RSS feed in the Browser's address space - look for it in your browser heading - like this one:
http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/new...te=1&p=3056804

after the last digits you'll see the little retangle with the letters RSS in it

> sometimes your browser hides this symbol, sometimes not - you'll have to check your browser to see how to have the symbol show up<

click on the RSS button, and another address will be given - copy that address, and then add it into your email program following the program's directions -

I have a MAC, and use MAC mail, so if you're using something else like Windows, then there's probably another way to get your feeds - and you'll need to go to the "TECH TALK" thread in this forum "TCS Support/Announcements".

You should be on the page that you actually want to get your information from. If you want all of thecatsite threads, and posts, then you should be on this page: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/.

If you want only the threads and posts from a special forum like "Cat Nutrition", you should be on that main page before copying the feed address.
Sometimes when you click on the RSS button, you will get choices of what feed you want.

I've probably confused the heck out of this trying to explain - but hopefully you'll get some appropriate help.

This is the feed address for "The Lounge" forum:
feed://www.thecatsite.com/forums/external.php?type=RSS2&forumids=2

I'm using the Safari Browser, and when I go to my mail application, I go to the top of the page where the Menu "File" is, and in that drop down menu are the words "Add RSS feeds", I select that, then another small window opens and I paste in the Feed address and click on "Add".

Once I do that, all the posts from that feed come into my mail application, and I can select a title I find of interest. Once that post opens, at the bottom of the first part of the post and to continue reading the information you click on the words "Read More" - that will take you back to thecatsite website and the thread where that information is stored.

Some websites have a link within the website, usually on the main page, with this one, I haven't seen it, it may be there - but, it's just as easy going to the address window of my browser for me, so that's what I do.

I'm sorry, I can't really explain it any better I don't think - but, I hope this helps a little.

I don't think here would be any way to restrict people from posting pictures, as it's just a piece of code and a link eg. [img]link[/ img]. You can't stop people from typing that unfortunately. And yes, the majority of people aren't spammers, and like to post pics of their kitties when they join.

No matter how fast we are, the RSS feeds will pick up these posts. Your best bet as others have said is to unsubscribe from the feed, and use the New Posts button on the forum itself.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention anyway, maybe we can put up some sort of warning for those who want to subscribe to the feed?

Thank you for your thoughtful response. I have deleted the Main "thecatsite.com" RSS feed, and limited it to a couple of the forums that I'm most interested in seeing quickly, like the "Stray and Feral" forum. The RSS Feed is such a great thing to have, but I see, now, it does have its problems.
Thanks, again!
