I'm so sorry I post so often about my cats health... but this is seriously ridiculous.

I adopted Marmalade (almost 1yo) from the pound here in December last year (and she is now an indoor cat). I knew she had the leftovers of cat flu... and I knew she had fleas 'n mites, 'n other stuff like that... which i've been faithfully treating. I had no idea when I adopted her, that i'd end up with such an expensive cat, taking her to the vet every month for unexpected visits (minus the few times I had to go get her vaccinations).

Last month I took her to the vet after she'd been puking for a day or so. She wouldn't keep any food down. I thought it may have been the fish she was fed, because my other cat Max is "allergic" to fish.... so we went home. After a few days, Marmalade started vomitting and getting diarrhoea, and was diagnosed with Coccidiosis. That was all treated, and worked out fine.

Just the other day I was feeding her fish again, and then she went for a day puking up everything she ate (she puked 6 times that day). She was vomitting violently, and it didn't look like she'd digested any food for days. I took her to the vet again. I said again that she was puking and they looked her over. Her temperature was fine. She's still playing, she's still being a little
like always. They gave her an injection to stop her puking. That lasted maybe 36 hours.

I went and stayed at my parents last night, because I was sick.... and I came back this morning to find she'd puked again. I fed her, and then 4 hours later (about half 'n hour ago)... she puked again. Except this time, it was after eating chicken.

I have no idea what to do. I have no idea what to feed her that will help her settle her stomach. She pukes up her dry food as well. She recently seems to be scoffing her food as well... so maybe that's a reason for it? Except she's only getting very tiny meals... and she always seems hungry after them.

I've heard the suggestion about boiled chicken... and Dad also suggested some weetbix.

Any ideas anyone?

you don't say what you are feeding her..Is it patte or chunky? I have a cat with mega e and she can't eat anything chunky at all. Maybe you could try a patte style food like Wellness or Innova and see how that works. If need be try liquidfying her food in a blender. Just add a little water to the canned food so its the consistancy of a milk shake. Small meals multiple times a day are better. Try to pick one food and stick with it. Cats will get loose stools when their food is switched. Good luck.

What do you mean by "feeding her fish" ? Do you mean a cat food with fish in it or literally fresh caught fish? If the latter, cooked or raw? And if raw... seriously, what the heck?! Never (to everyone reading) feed a cat raw fish, especially if it's fresh water fish. They're heavily parasitized with protozoa and flukes.

Hi Speedy. Sorry Marmalade is under the weather. I think maybe a bit more information might be in order. What kind of fish and chicken are you feeding Marmalade? Wet, raw or maybe kibble? One of my cats will vomit any kind of wet flaked food. We're not sure why she does this but the vet seems to think the small flakes may get stuck in her throat and irritate her to the point of vomiting *shrug*, I dunno. So I avoid feeding her flaked food. She is a fast, fast eater when it comes to her wet food and I think that may have been part of her problem. I no longer feed her flaked or pate' wet foods. She gets chunks. She eats slower and there is no vomiting. She does just fine with her kibble. Maybe if you post more info we can maybe help Marmalade.

I feed her a variety of Whiskas cat food from the supermarket. Often times it's meat in gravy... and yes, it's fish from a can... not fresh from the sea lol. The chicken I fed her was very "flakey" chicken. Like i'd said in my original post, Dad said that I should give her a little bit of weetbix (mixed in with her cat food), just to help her stomach out a bit... and that did actually work. Anyone know how long I should be doing this... and when I should wean her off the weetbix, to see if she can hold her food down?

Marmalade never used to be a fast eater. Didn't matter what it was, she'd eat it slowly... and she'd love some of it behind... to eat it later. She no longer does that. Instead, she gobbles it all up, and doesn't leave anything behind at all.

I only feed her dry food as a treat... although she does drink plenty of water.

Some people will go fishing and then think they can give their cats the heads and guts left over from cleaning - it's not that uncommon here for people to try it.

Whiskas has some funky stuff in it. Like wheat gluten. Some cats can't handle it and the low quality ingredients.

Your best bet is to get your cat back in to see the vet to make sure this isn't something serious and then try to improve the diet with better quality foods, preferably non-grocery store foods if you can. We have some Australian members, so they'll know what's higher quality there better than I do.

Sounds A LOT like my Eden. She'd eat & be fine for the longest time - then she'd be puking up food all the time. I switched her to a limited ingredient diet, less ingredients for her to be reacting to. I tried a few foods before we found one that worked & have stuck w/ it. She eats Natural Balance's Chicken & Green Pea LID. It's a little bit more expensive, but it saved me all the vet visits (and carpet cleanings!).

I've taken her about 4 times regarding this same issue, and they always say it's food related. The pound never told me what they fed her... though I did just e-mail them in desperation, asking them what they feed their cats. I fed her weetbix, mixed with her own food twice... and I decided tonight, to see if she'll be able to eat that chicken on its own without throwing up... so I will find out in the morning what has happened lol. At the moment i'm feeding her something in little tins that isn't whiskas, even though she threw up on it the other day... so i'll see how she goes tomorrow.

If your budget will allow; You might try introducing her to some premium foods. I am not familiar with weetbix. I am familiar with Whiskas. From the posts I've read I think you are from Australia? I might be wrong on that. If you are from Australia, check out the Nutro site. Nutro is a premium food that may help you with some of Marmalade's issues. I've had excellent luck with both Nutro Max cat food and Nutro Natural Choice cat foods. By going to a specialty food, be it Nutro or another premium brand, you will be eliminating a lot of additives to Marmalade's diet. Just in case you are interested, here is the website in Australia, http://www.nutro.com.au/

So which is it? Coccidia or always food issues? I was suggesting you take her back to the vet in case this was still a problem because it can be very difficult to treat.

Originally it was Coccidia she had. She was definitely diagnosed with it. I got rid of that problem... then a few weeks after, she just started puking her food. Nothing else. Then a little while after that, she was getting diarrhoea and not puking. The vets could never find anything wrong with her stomach when they felt her up... so that's why they think this time it's food related.

NutroMike: Weetbix is a human cereal that's often used to help put something a little "extra" in an animals weak stomach if they've got diarrhoea 'n stuff. My parents told me that's what they used to do with their cats if they had an upset stomach.

Marmalade was still getting diarrhoea a couple of days ago, and when I re-started her on the weetbix mixed in with her cat food... her poo went back to normal after a day or so. So i'm thinking that's what the problem is. The food that I mostly give her (Whiskas brand kitten food which is meat in gravy) doesn't have enough substance to it.

I called up the pound the other day to ask them what they feed their cats, and I asked them also about Marmalades history.

Apparently she was a stray that was brought in, and apparently they feed their cats something called "Supercoat", which is available in the supermarkets here.... so i'm going to try her on that. They say that they've never had a problem with any of their animals getting upset stomachs on it... so that sounds good to me.
