Lately when my 10yr old domestic short hair grooms herself it seems like her tongue has become longer or bigger and she makes a very loud licking smacking sound; you can here her clear down the hall in another room. She seems to be grooming more often and more vigorously. Could this be dry mouth, teeth problems, age? It's driving us crazy!

No clue, but she might be able to star in a Tootsie Pop commercial.

I'm new here and just had to comment because I can't stand the sound of my Persian mix grooming. Those smacking and licking sounds drive me nuts! Funny thing is my cat, Jezzy, knows it annoys me so now when she is feeling esp frisky she will smack her lips to get my attention lol! It's her cue to me that she wants to play wild and crazy

Thanks JezzyBezzy. At least now I know other cats are annoying their owners. It's just developed recently so I wondered if it were a problem but maybe we should just be grateful for a quiet 10 years.

This is Parker exactly. He has buck teeth, so his licking has always been loud. When he can't reach the place he wants to lick very well, the sound is louder. He does this in the morning when he wants me to wake up. He sits by the door and licks and licks and licks. It wakes me up out of the deepest sleeps.

I know he can't help the sound and I really do try to be patient with him but its like having someone chew gum with their mouth open right next to you all day and night.

I feel your pain! Mine wait until I am nearly asleep, park themselves at the foot of my bed, and start in on their nightly groom-a-thon. Drives me bonkers. They lick and slurp and snort for what seems like hours. Just when I think I can't stand it anymore, they come back up to my end of the bed to cuddle.
