Anyone have an Android phone?

We have decided to upgrade to new smartphones as soon as money allows to Android phones. When we were in the AT&T store I played with the Windows phones and didn't particularly like them.

As pre-answers to questions...
  1. We have been with AT&T for over 10 years and have been pleased with them. We see no reason to change and a few reasons not to, i.e. we're locked into the "unlimited" data plans that really mean unlimited.
  2. We have iPhones now. One or both were compromised and my debit card number stolen. That's the main reason we're getting new phones.
  3. When we got our phones the iPhone was the only game in town. I don't like how Apple runs their App Store (that's where we got compromised), and especially don't like how they decided that they don't like Adobe and refuse to work with them to support Flash. I'm just not a fan of Apple in general and that sealed the deal.
For anyone who already has one - what do you have? Do you like it? Would you get a different one if you could (either Android or another kind of smartphone)? Anything we should look at or ask before making our final decision?

Thanks!

I've got an Android, namely an HTC Wildfire, which is pretty much HTC's "basic" model, meaning I didn't have to pay anything extra for it. It's smaller than the Desire and doesn't have as much screen resolution, so probably not suitable for anybody who's mainly interested in games and/or videos. I'm quite happy with it, especially the small size and ease of use. There are lots of (free) apps for it, too.

If you want to get an idea of the pros and cons of various Android phones, take a look at androidforums.com.

But I will be buying the Thunderbolt soon because it works 8 times as fast because it is a G4 whereas the Droid X is only a G3. It' all coming down to Apple vs. Android and the Android platform will simply be the winner in the end just like Blue Ray knocked DVD out of the running. BTW, I am not biased on this matter; I do own an iPad and an iMac but when I compared the Droid X and i4 side by side, my loyalty to Apple took a nosedive. The Thunderbolt was just released and you can think of it as a G4 phone cloned from the G3 Droid X. If you are thinking of buying a new phone, and you are thinking G4, you need to be reading up on the Thunderbolt. And you will be left in a cloud of dust if you pick a G3 at this point in time as you will be taking a step backwards.

Me I have one I have the HTC desire hd and I love it to bits, I'm considering when it comes round to it to not bother upgrading because I personally don't think any other smart phone matches up to this

The market for the apps is great and very easy to use, you can search for new releases, top downloads and free apps there's just as many free as there is to pay

When I get back to computer I can tell you more if you want

We're definitely getting G4 phones. Denver doesn't have G4 yet, but the word on the grapevine is that is should be rolled out sometime this summer. No reason not to have the ability to access the best network when it's right around the corner!

Remember that different companies brand the Android OS different ways. When we were looking for our smartphones, we found that Samsung was the brand that messed with it the least and we're incredibly happy. Samsung phones are also super tough - both Mike and I have only owned Samsung phones for the last 5+ years and they have never died or broken on us. We are rough with them, I throw mine in my purse and toss my purse around, we both sit on them when they're in our back pockets, we've dropped them, stepped on them, thrown it (all of the later by accident, lol). A few little scratches, but no dents or anything major.

DH and I have Droid X phones and we're happy with them. I always said that I didn't see the need for a smartphone. That was before we got them. The Droid X is Motorola. We have a Verizon plan. And we're pleased.

My niece has the Droid Incredible. And my sister and BIL have the Droid Pro. We all like our Droids. We are all on Verizon, too.

I have the Google Nexus S and am loving it sooo much! I had been looking for a long time for a new phone and I just couldn't decide what I wanted....then the moment I spotted the one that I have, I knew what I wanted. And I haven't regretted it since.

Samsung doesn't play fair with their updates, thus carriers boycott them because they're not willing to pay. So I would never recommend a Samsung phone if you want your OS updated.

I am an AT&T user and per your requirements I suggest the duel core Motorola Atrix or the lesser powered HTC Inspire. These are AT&T's current top Android phones that are 4G and on 2.2 (so you have flash support). iirc the Atrix is $199 with 2 year contract but has more internal storage and a nice sized SD card in the box, the Inspire is cheaper - I don't remember what it's internal storage is off the top of my head.

Don't count on getting the Gingerbread update, though, as AT&T aren't the best for updating Android anyways.

I got my phone last year, a basic Motorola Flipside (I like having a hardware keyboard). It's only on 2.1, which I'd consider it's only real fault. I do like some of Motorola's included apps. They include a good task manager and Phone Portal, a networking app that lets you connect to PCs wirelessly on your wireless network. Motoblur is annoying, though easily replaced- in that instance HTC's SenseUI is superior.

Do remember though that the pricing on these phones is 2 year contract + purchase of one of their smartphone data plans. These aren't the same as iPhones plans or feature phone data plans. They are separate, price is 200mbs for $15, 2gb for $25. There's a reason why people hate AT&T for their data plans.

I wonder if the Samsung thing is geographical, we've never had a problem getting the updates within a reasonable amount of time after they've been released. We're stuck at the version we have now though, I forget what it is, but our phones are older so they're not releasing anymore updates for the particular phone. We plan on rooting them and updating them that way, so it really doesn't matter I suppose.

The carrier boycott is a US issue for the Galaxy S phones. But regardless, there are better phones out now than that line.

What do you have? -I have the HTC EVO Shift and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! I got it in Feb when my phone was due for an upgrade (finally kissed my old dinosaur good-bye). I couldn't be happier!

Do you like it? I LOVE IT! I love all of the features and the quality. I also love that I have the option to use the slide out keyboard or the touch screen one. (My service provider is Sprint and I share a family plan with my sister and her family).

Would you get a different one if you could (either Android or another kind of smartphone)? Nope, I'm very happy with my phone, the service, and the quality

Anything we should look at or ask before making our final decision? HTC EVO Shift!

I've had the Samsung Mesmerize for 6 months. I couldn't be happier with it. No problems, of any kind regarding anything. It's easy to use.

And I got it free. I'm a U S Cellular customer for the last 5 years. I couldn't be happier with them. Much is free. Service is great. I had AT&T and Verizon in the past. I'll never go back.

I have a blackberry torch and I like it, but it sucks for making calls. It's really quiet and cuts out a lot.

My husband has a Motorola Atrix and he seems to really like it.

I recently upgraded to the Droid X from a Blackberry Curve (worst phone ever! ) and I LOVE it!! It's so fast and has great free apps. If you have the Amazon Appstore, they have a free app everyday. I've had it for about a month and I have no complaints

^AT&T locks you into using the app market and blocks some apps. The reason why Apple went with AT&T originally is because they have like business practices.

I would also recommend the Nexus S - http://www.google.com/nexus/#

It's the only purely Android phone, made by Google to best use all their features. The other Android phones are messed with by the carrier/phone company, but the Nexus best uses all the Android features.

It will be available on 4G soon as well

The phone I'm mainly looking at is the Atrix. I love the docking station/laptop it comes with.

I leave the tech phone stuff up to my husband. I'll ask him about the Gingerbread thing, though.

We've been with AT&T for over 10 years. The really good thing that we have is that we are locked into the Unlimited Data Plan as long as we keep it. We're definitely not changing that! If we couldn't keep that we would probably be changing carriers.

Hmm...I'll have to check into that...

Ah, darnit! Only available for Sprint!

Hopefully we'll be able to upgrade phones this week. I'll let y'all know what we get!

We had unlimited data and weren't able to keep it unless we wanted to pay for the costs of the phones. Remember the promotional pricing on these phones, in this case $199 for the Atrix, is based on you agreeing to a 2 year contract and a data package. This is how they make up that $300-400 you don't pay upfront.

Now nothing is stopping you from getting any phone you like and unlocking it, provided that you can find instructions for it. You can even buy some phones unlocked already. Just expect to pay full price. The nexus one tend to be one people get because it's easy to unlock and even easier (supported) to put custom roms on. Simply put, it's a favorite for developers and those that like to hack their phones. If you do neither, that won't matter to you.

Most new phones are on Froyo. It's good enough if your main concern is flash support and being able to install to the SD card. Linux distros update roughly every 6 months, in all versions (including android) the updates fix security and support issues. Part of that is a speedier more responsive os/product - though it doesn't always work out that way.
