It's not quite official yet, but, we will be moving to the Portland/Seattle area, probably around the middle of June. We are not sure which city we will be going to, we should find out soon. My husband is going to transfer to an auto-shop up there we just have find out which one will take him (he works for a "chain" store). So we will be moving our furry family 9+ hours away. I'm so not looking forward to THAT drive! LOL Pandora is the only one who is good in the car.

I am so nervous for this move. I've wanted to get out of the Reno area for so long because the crime rate is horrible and the desert is dreadful, but I've been here for 5 years and I know where everything is! I love Oregon and Washington, it's so pretty there! I'm looking forward to it but I'm nervous too! Starting over, being in a new city where nothing is familiar, it's kinda scary. Once we find out which city we'll be going to, we will be going up there to apartment hunt.. I've already got a bunch of places bookmarked for us to check out that are totally pet friendly.

My husband's parents are not very happy with us. They live in California and wanted us to move back there to be closer to them, but California is just not for us. We were not happy when we lived there last time and we had a lot of issues because they were too involved in our relationship. I don't want to repeat that because it didn't end well for anyone.

I will definitely keep everyone updated on what happens and what not.

I live in Oregon....both Portland & Seattle are great. Especially if you are used to living in the city. Personally city life is not for me. I have driven to Portland the last two days for training classes. Ugh...I don't like traffic though it doesn't paralyze me with fear like it once did. My daughter (and grandson) live in St. Johns which is in NE Portland so I'm pretty good at driving into the city anymore. My DH leaves that driving to me. Hey...no traffic or freeway is going to keep me away from my Grandbaby!

There is so much cool stuff to do in both cities. You'll have lots of fun in either one!

Redmond/Seattle area is a lovely place my brother is out there. I've been to visit many times and wouldn't mind staying. don't know much about Portland though.

Good luck with the shift and finding a new place. I thought I was hard done by moving house in two weeks but that's only 10 minutes down the road!

Seattle is a gorgeous area. My sister lives there and I love visiting her. Washington is a beautiful place. This is exciting and hope it all goes well with the kitties on the road trip!! Much luck in your upcoming move

DH goes to Portland 5-6 times a year for union stuff with his union and he loves it there. It sounds like a beautiful area. I hope you'll be very happy.

Best of luck with your move!

Thanks everyone! I am very excited and just a little nervous and slightly worried about the kitties having panic attacks! LOL My chinchilla travels pretty well but he's getting old (9years).. so I'm a little worried about him too! We've moved every year when ever our lease was up on our apartments but never so far away.

Hope you like rain! Seattle is worse than Portland, though, in that department. So, you are going from "But, it's a dry heat!" to "Where's all this rain coming from?"

I lived in Portland for 7 years and miss it dearly. Jobs are really hard to come by. I moved back there and only lasted 3 months (in 2010) before I had to leave again because I didn't find work. Portland is closer to the ocean than Seattle. That is why I chose Portland over Seattle initially. I don't know if it has changed that much since I left in 2005, but you want to try to stay out of North (and some NE neighborhoods) and far SE Portland (like 82nd Ave and higher). I really like living in Gresham.

If you do end up going to Portland, let me know and I'll hook you up with my cousin. She has been there since the mid-90s. She could tell you what areas are nice now.

Thank you so much for your recommendations! We are very excited about the rainy cooler weather! We are thinking about the Beaverton area. We've heard it's nice there.

Yeah, Beaverton is nice. I lived there also. Great Farmers Market and park. Garden Home and Raleigh Hills neighborhoods are good.

I've been here for over ten years and I still don't know where anything is... that's what GPSs are for!

I wouldn't be too keen on the kitty Oregon Trail trip either though, poor things, such a looooong drive.

We've been to both cities many time. Portland has never done anything for me, but I like Seattle. Lots to do, good touristing in the area, and lots of good food (Ivar's, just for a starter). And we could park at a truck stop south of the city and easily take a bus all the way to downtown. Never did manage to get downtown in Portland.

As a hot rodder, neither would be a good choice for me, since there is so much rain. I would have to buy/build an enclosed car.

So it's actually official now. My husband has spoken to the District Manager in the Portland area and he was told he could transfer to whichever store he wants to go to. So we will be out of Nevada by the end of May! Woohoo!! I am pretty excited. We are going to the Portland area this weekend to find an apartment.
Still not sure which city we will end up in we have several choices: Beaverton, Tigard, Hillsboro, Gresham, Aloha and Portland.

Check out Mountain High in Gresham. I really liked that complex. In Tigard, try Georgetown Manor. Rose, the manager there, is really great and helpful.

Check out apartmentratings.com for complexes you are interested in. It's invaluable. Even though Georgetown Manor is managed by Princeton Property, it really is a good complex. Other than that, I'd try to steer clear of complexes managed by Princeton. They don't have a good reputation.

On the west side of... of... somewhere.
I live in Portland (Pearl District in NW, just north of downtown). Once you get settled in, let me know... You can easily get to downtown by the MAX trains... I hope your DH's job is on the same side as the apartment... commuting through downtown is a royal PitA. I did it for a while when I lived in NE and worked one of my jobs in Sherwood.

Have fun with the move! I did Chicago to PDX five years ago in a van with a mock cage for the cats... they were in harnesses and had leashes. Jack was the only one who ventured out on the leash...

Where in Beaverton? I enjoyed living there! Public transportation is really good there.

I'm jealous!
