I think it's common, but my cat always like to lay next to my computer. I have a laptop. On the part where it's always warm. But sometimes it gets really warm, and I usually move her away from the computer. But it can't cause health risks for her being so close to the computer heat, can it? Because computers can get really warm sometimes?

There could be some long term issue with wireless signals, but that affects you too. She likes the warmth & likes to be next to you. Let her stay there.

Her fur will insulate her against getting burns from it. However, if you like having your laptop and don't want it to crash, and maybe even in a way that makes files unretrievable, then keep your cat off of the laptop!
Computer components and extra heat, plus cat fur, do not mix.

I was worried about the fur and what it could do to the computer. But it's hard to get her to stay away, she really likes that spot.

My cats would like lots of things I don't allow them to have: onion and garlic seasoned foods, chocolate, string, rubber bands, wire, to stand on the range top, etc. As the human who knows better I don't let them have these items or sit in areas I don't want them to be.
Keep moving your cat to a spot that safe for her to be or make a place, a little higher up, that's comfortable.

I don't think it is a problem at all, but if it bother's you set your laptop off the side of your desk sitting on it's side, resting up on the side of the desk. I have mine that way but rests off the side of the couch on the floor.

I have one cat that is always by the computer. Her fur will insulate against the heat and she likes the heat anyway. She also like laying on top of the flat bed printer. As long as your kitty isn't trying to hack into the Pentagon; I'd say let her have her fun
