I've got this great little cat, named Snug. He's five years old, and I've been with him through think and thin, but lately, I've been having some trouble with the little guy. If I can't get it sorted out fast, something awful could happen.

About eight months back, we had given him some Hartz flea treatment that we assumed was safe. It ended up poisening him, however, and it took three or four months to get him back to the old Snug I know and love. However, he was not fully resotred. The insident left him with some odd nuro problems. He began to sleep face-first in my shoes (he'd never done that before) and his walking was very stiff. So sitff, that he hardly bent his knees in the back legs at all. He gained a ton of weight, and whenever startled or afarid, he'd go blind for an hour or so, or at least untill he calmed down, and he was a tad bit moody than he had ever been.

Now, before all of this, my cat would go outside and lounge around, and play with the neighbors, and keep the feild mice out. But th few months after, we moved to a diffrent place, out into the country with alot of wild and angry cats. For fear that he may be attacked, and go blind, or lost and hit by a car I kept him inside, to have free range of the house. He would sun in all the wondows, and sleep the day away. He got out only a few times, but when I cought him, he would grumble a little, but be fine afterwords.

Today, however, he had gotten out, and hidden under our rap-around pourch. I crawled underneath to get him, and he swatted at me. Now, my cat is not a violent thing. Prior to the incident, he had never growled or swatted at me, ever. But when I was under the porch, he swatted and growled. I didn't take it to serouisly, so insted of backing off, I reached for him. While I did that, he growled, swatted and bit me. I pulled my arm back, startled and shocked, and he stood up, arched his back, spit and hissed, and ran into the bushes. As I crawled to get him, h hid under some steps. I took a bit of wood (about five inches long) and poked at him to chase him out so I could grab him to bring him inside. When I did that, however, he full on attacked the piece of wood. Growling, biting, aggressivly hissing and swatting. Finally, we got him in a pillowcase, where he still struggled and hissed, untill we got him in my room. As I walked in there only a few seconds after in escape, he was calm, cool, and his sweet old self again.

Now, because he keeps darting for the door to get out, and he only answers to me, my parents have encouraged me to keep him in my room. However, I'm not so sure if that is the best idea. I feel that it may be too crule to keep him in a small space all day, without very much contact from anybody but myself, but so far it seems to be the only thing we can do at the moment. And it may become an increasing problem when I go off to college, because my firt year will be spent on campus. My mother suggested, because of the attack and the nuro issues, that I conister putting him down. I really, really don't want to do that, because I love my cat so much. We do pretty much everything together and things ust won't be the same without him.

Can anybody tell me what I should do? Is there another alternative, or do I really have to put my beloved Sung down? I really need some answers, and fast.

Another reaction to the poision was his eating habbits.
I have to hide his cat food from him, because he will eat untill his stomach blows up. It seems he has lost that signal in the brain that tells him when he's full, so e eats, and eats and eats.
This was the cause for his weight gain.

Please take Snug to the vet to get checked out. He was probably frightened by something when you were trying to catch him. Cats will do that...go after their best buds if scared.

But the other issues need to be addressed. He deserves all the love and help you can get to him.

Hartz kills cats, or makes them very sick. I am so sorry you had to learn this the hard way.

I will keep him in my prayers.

Sounds like he need to go to a vet who has the equipment to check his blood pressure! High blood pressure in a cat can cause blindness! The overweight issue can cause the HBP like in humans! The HBP can be easily treated with amlodipine tabs (norvasc)

A visit to the right vet with the proper equipment to measure bood pressure is in order! Good luck!

Your poor little Snug. I am sorry about the Hartz products. Someone else just posted recently about their cat dying right after receiving the Hartz flea treatment. I do not understand why Hartz products are still being sold
. Something should be done to stop Hartz.

I don't have any advice for you but I do have lots of vibes for you and your kitty.

Thank you so much for your great advice

I was surprised to find out that cats could have high blood pressure! I just assumed him losing his vision was due to the problems from the Hartz treatment.

I will be sure to get him to a vet as best as I can, and I'll let all of you know afterwords of what results are.
You guys have been a great help, thank you!
