In the snow!!!!
This is something that has been in my family for as long as I can remember but I don't know what it is. I have long suspected that it is a pipe of some sort, but the end is sealed and I have never figured out how to open it. What is it - does anyone know how I can find out?

I think you're correct!
Or, perhaps an antique parasol handle--why didn't I think of that before? I used to collect and restore antique parasols.
