What do you do to help your cat with fur-balls?

My cat has just begun to allow me to comb her. She has hated it her whole life, but now, I seem to have found the right comb for her. I don't give any gel as I'm not sure it's a good idea. Is it?

I use a pet product called "Laxatone" which you can buy either over the counter at any pet store (they have other brands as well), or at a vets (around here they mostly use Laxatone). You can also order it on line for cheaper, but consider the shipping price. I buy stuff in bulk with 6 special needs cats, so I go over the limit so I get free shipping when i do order.

Just one idea. It works great for the couple of hairball cats I have. I brush 2x/week to all and every day for my Himalayan.

Hairballs are SO lovely, aren't they? Poor cats, though. Ugh!

Warmly,

Yes I feel just aweful when I see her trying to work one out... as you can tell it's obstructing her airways.

I've always been nervous to use laxatone-like products... as it's man-made and I just wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not.

I was reading some about cat grass again today. I've tried that in the past but it yellows and dies within days each time I've tried. But I may just pick up some wheat berries and try making my own. She likes the grass we've tried, it just never lasts. And to be completely honest I *think* she might have even peed on it once or twice. Hmmm...
may need to rethink this lol!

Not sure this is what you are asking but my kitties love the zoom groom. It is supposed to be like a massage but when I am done I am surprised they have any fur left it picks up so much fur. My boy is a Maine Coon and gets mats and I use a pick for those. It is one i got to use on a knitting board and it seems to work really well. It breaks the mats apart and I work until he stops wagging his tail then I know he is done.

Hi,
I'm a newbie here, and cat crazy !
We had a cat for 19 years, and she would get furballs blocking her stomach occasionally, despite brushing her regularly throughout the spring and summer months.
Vets here recommend giving a cat 10 millilitres of freshly pressed pineapple juice, once a day for 5 or 6 days, dribbled into the cats mouth from a syringe (without needle !). Our cat wouldn't drink it willingly from her dish ! The pineapple juice apparently causes the fur ball to naturally disintegrate. It certainly worked with our cat. Please note, tinned pineapple juice will not work, it has to be pressed from a fresh pineapple.

I hope this may be of help.
I have managed to get our new cat Misti used to being combed on a daily basis, so hopefully the pineapple juice will not be necessary, although it wouldn't surprise me if she laps it up from her dish, she enjoys eating quite a variety of raw fruit and vegetables, although our vet has told us to keep her away from banana, prunes and raisins.

. I try to brush my cats everyday or so with the Cat Zoom Groom and then use the furminator once a week too. I also give them 1/2 tsp. of 100% pure petrolatum (vaseline) once a week as well. The vaseline doesn't absorb in their digestive tract and helps to coat the gut to ease the passage of their hair.

Daily grooming and a regular regimen with hairball remedy products. I rotate between three, Tomlyn brand laxatone, Petromalt and Cat Lax. In winter they get the hair ball gels once every 4 or 5 days. During shedding season they get it every 2-3 days.

Give hair ball remedies on an empty stomach, at least 2 hours before meals or medications (as it will interfere with nutrient absorption)
