biting???

I am new at having a cat as part of the family and these forums have been a great help. I have a two year old cat that I adopted from the humane society 2 months ago. He is a really well behaved pet. The one problem that we are having with him is that he often bites your hand when petting or brushing him. When you say no in a stern voice he will immediately lick the hand that he just bit. As far as the biting it does not break the skin at all. It seems like it may even be playful. Any information would be much appreciated. It seems to happen most often when I am combing or patting his belly - but is not just in that situation.

Some of mine do that, its play, mine think that when you brush or pet them you want to play with them. Some of mine grew out of that some of them jist think its great fun to play with your hands. Mine also will stop and lick when you tell them no. Most times when I'm brushing I get one or two strokes in then I tell them no, then I continue to try and get some more strokes of the brush in. 2 strokes at a time, it takes longer to comb their fur but it gets done. They play with each other like that so they think its alright.

It's a really good sign that he'll lick once you tell him no. While he's probably just playing now, later if he ever really loses his temper with you, you'll already have some boundaries set about teeth and how they can and cannot be used!

I bet your cat is male, I have male cat too and he's biting me a lot sometimes it's too hard until I got wound..
It may be male cat's instinct to bite if he's being pet too much

Cat's have a ton of sensitive glands along their backs and their skin get over-stimulated. Some cats tolerate petting and brushing just fine, other's will take it for a few minutes, then SNAP, will turn and nip or even hiss/growl and run off. You just have to learn how much is too much and stop before the cat gets to that point of losing it

There are two kinds of soft bites in my experience.

One is a quick but rapid nomnomnom bite, often with ears back, but very soft and the cat usually looks excited. That is a I want to play with you and am feeling happy and frisky bite. A variation is wrapping his or her front legs around your arm and soft biting while sometimes also soft kicking with the back feet as a mock-kill, but its really just play.

The other is a relaxed state and then quick single pinch bite, and that is IMO a "hey, cut it out" chomp when you pet in a way he or she didn't want or has just had enough. The lick after is a affection gesture IMO.
