Neighbourhood Cat/Stray in Our Window - HELP!

I'm not sure if this is the right section, if you think it would fit somewhere else, feel free to move it

Today was the first nice day where we could have our windows open and we have a problem.

We live on the main floor of our apartment building, the area has a lot of stray/feral cats but also a lot of house pets that people just let wander. When I got home from dropping Mike off at work I could hear meowing outside, I thought it might be Kitler, the stray that we used to feed until he disappeared sometime last summer (no idea why I thought that, I guess because he used to come to our window and meow when he wanted to be fed). I went outside and there's a HUGE friendly orange cat that comes running over to me meowing, purring and rubbing up against me.

I thought that he might be the upstairs neighbour's cat so I brought him in and knocked on the building manager's door. She said that those people moved out last summer and brought their cat with them, but that she thought that it was the building manager from next door's cat, Jasmine. We put it back outside and s/he was gone for about an hour... but now s/he's back and is actually sitting on our window sill (outside) bugging the crap out of Leiki. I tried moving to another room, but the cat just comes and jumps on that window sill meowing, purring and rubbing on the screen while Leiki sits in the sill on the inside hissing and growling. I tried moving her away from the window, but she just goes back. I tried going outside and shooing the cat away, but s/he just comes back meowing louder than ever.

Update - she was growling at him/her for the last half hour but now they're rubbing faces against the screen.

What do I do? I don't know if it's the building manger next door's cat or not, but I can't have a cat meowing outside our window all night. I have to take Mike to work at 10:30 every night and get up at 6:30 in the morning to go pick him up, I can't go to sleep until about 1am and I know this cat's meowing is going to drive me insane all night. S/he will just not go away!

What should I do? If s/he comes back tomorrow night should I bring him/her in and lock him/her in the bathroom overnight and then go over to the other building in the morning to see if it is theirs?

I'm going to take a quick look on Kijiji just now to see if there's a cat that looks the same that's missing... but I don't know what to do otherwise. We can't have another cat right now - our place is too small to bring in another pet (we have two dogs as well as Leiki).

I don't know a TON about how to treat neighborhood cats, but I would say that maybe closing the window might be a good idea for now? If you have blinds, pull those too. Again, this is me not knowing a ton on the subject, but if you want the other kitty to vacate the premise that might be the best way.

Also... Kitler. I LOVE IT. Did it have the markings and everything?

Kitler was black and white, a young cat/older kitten. He had the marking on one side, but not on the other. The last two/three times that we saw him, he had a big cut on the inside of his back leg. We washed it with saline solution and then fed him, but one night he just didn't come back. He was a neighbourhood cat too (we think, he was SUPER friendly).

I tried closing the window, but within about 10 minutes it got way too hot in here... I don't know how I would sleep. Plus, it didn't stop Leiki from being in the window and hissing/growling non stop. I keep shooing her away from the window but she just keeps going back. I've tried going outside and shooing the other cat away, even got the landlord to do it as well, but he just keeps coming back. Leiki is alternating between hissing/growling at the cat and then trying to headbutt him through the window. He just keeps meowing at her/me and rubbing all over the place. I got a good look at his back end, and I think it's a male... although I suppose it could be a female that has gone into heat... I'm not good with cat anatomy... all I know is that it looks different than Leiki's bits, lol.

I took a picture of him (was trying to get a picture of his back end to post on here for the sex, but he turned before my camera went off).

I just had another thought... I had a friend living with me when I first moved here, she got a cat as a kitten but then moved out about 10 months later. It's been about 2 years, but is it possible that he would come back here if he got out of her place? She has lived in two places since she moved out of here... the place she lives now is about 4 blocks away. He was never outside that I know of though.

I'm also concerned because I have to take our dogs out to go to the bathroom once more before I go to bed. They'll be leashed, so there isn't any danger to the cat, but they're going to FLIP OUT barking and carrying on... this is not going to be a fun night, lol.

From what you've said about how affectionate the cat seems, I don't imagine the cat is a what one would typically call a 'stray'. It seems a little dubious that he's an indoor/outdoor cat if he seems so very intent on hanging around your window and getting attention from you and Leiki.

I've had some experience with stranger cats showing up on my doorstep and it's always been one of two things: the cat is an indoor cat who got out and for some reason can't find his way back home or the cat was either kicked out of their home or left behind. Obviously I can't say anything for certain, but he/she definitely seems like he was an owned cat and due to him sticking around, seems like for whatever reason he can't go back to his own home.

If I were you I'd take the cat into my home and try and find its owner, since I'd be a little worried about the cat disappearing/moving on and ending up in a bad situation (but there are a lot of cat-haters that live near me so my paranoia is large and founded). Alternately you could feed the cat for a day or two and see if it gets bored and returns to its owner - if it isn't too worried about getting fed it'd be my bet that it's got a home it knows it can go back to. Either way, I would ask your partner to have a little patience with the kitties constant meowing, as he could very well be a scared and lost kitty who can sense a kind soul (you) and needs some care.

The last strange cat that turned up on our doorstep camped out on the porch and cried for food and was desperate for cuddles. Turned out it was an inside cat who had got out and got lost, didn't know how to feed herself and was desperate for human love and attention. Luckily we found her owner after a week and all was well, although there were some tears when we said goodbye as my partner's brother and girlfriend had decided to keep her.

I hope all goes well for you and kitty

He finally went away at about 3 am. When I was coming back from picking Mike up at work we saw him in front of the landlord's place for the building next door. They are the only apartment in that building that is on the main floor and has a patio, he was sitting down the side of the apartment in the grass with another cat, so I'm assuming he's theirs.

It wasn't Mike that I was worried about about having to put up with the meowing, it was myself, lol. Today is my day off, so I can have a nap, but everyday I have to give Mike a ride to work at 10:30, I don't get to sleep until about 1-2, then I leave to pick Mike up at 6:30, getting home around 7:20. I go back to bed for an hour (if I work at 9) or a few more hours (if I work later). I need my sleep, which I couldn't get until the cat left.

I would bring it in if we were living in a house, but, being in an apartment I just can't do that. We can't lock Leiki in a room because she'll flip out, I don't have an extra litter box to put in the bathroom if I were to lock the other cat in there, I can't have them roam around together because Leiki seems to alternate between hating him and somewhat liking him (although mostly hating him), and we have the dogs - they like to play with cats, but they are very intense, so if the cat isn't used to that kind of thing, they get scared.

I ended up just having to bring them out when he had left the window for a few minutes last night. Of course the second we got outside they saw/smelled him and started losing their minds. I kept them fairly quiet (we have to be careful with how we quiet them around other animals because they are hunting dogs and we need them to bark) but they wouldn't do their business because they were so intent on getting to the cat.

I sent an email to a girl that lived with us at one point that is friend's with my old roommate to see if it was her cat, but I'm thinking more and more that it's the landlord's cat from next door. The only weird thing is, whenever we've walked by them before, their orange cat was very skittish and would run away if you approached him (we tend to pet all the cats we see, lol), whereas this one wasn't. I also took the garbage out last night, after I took the dogs out, and checked his paws - he is front declawed. That's what my old roommate's cat was as well. I guess I'll find out if he's hers sooner or later, if he is then we'll get him back to her, if he's not we need to find a way to stop him from being so interested in our windows... even though he will also sit in the middle of the parking lot and meow loudly as well.

I would put up a flyer in your apartment bldg. and in the next door one with a pic of the cat and see if anyone responds.

He's so cute! Too bad you can't keep him. I hope he is someone's pet that is looking for him, and that he has a good home.

He didn't come back last night but I did see him in the window of the building manager's apartment next door, so, as long as it's the same cat, he's hers.

There is not much I can do at this point, unless he starts coming to the window again. If he does, then I will go over and talk to her. Asking people around here to keep their pets inside is useless, especially with cats. I can't even tell you how many times we've ran into neighbourhood cats and dogs just wandering around the streets. The cats seem to be outside either all of the time, or just at night, the dogs are mostly out during the day. People leave them out in their yards and just assume that they won't wander. It's very annoying because I have a dog that's dog reactive/aggressive on leash (he was attacked on his leash, so he's on guard all the time now), so when I see a dog off leash I have to hope that neither dog saw each other and walk the other way. I can't imagine how people that are afraid of dogs walk around here. I've tried calling AC about dogs at large but have basically been told that they have bigger problems to worry about. That's going to do me a lot of good when one of these dogs approaches mine and is injured, or if it injures mine. Thankfully, none of those dogs seems to be the least bit interested in cats.
