I found a log

We were outside yesterday and I found this great log I would love to turn into some sort of planter for flowers or ivy or something.

Here are some pics:

I don't know if there is a way to seal it. I just love the knot hole. Is it worth saving for a planter?

I wouldn't bother to seal it. Use it for a while and let it rot. You could probably get a couple years out of it. To make it last a little longer, remove more of the inside wood and line it with plastic and use containers for the plants.

Now here's the downside. Do no put it anywhere near your home. It's natural already starting to break down wood. If you have it up near your house with soil in it and regularly water it you'll may end up with termites or ants living in the wood.

That is one good-lookin' log. I completely understand why you want to keep it! If you decide to seal it so you don't have to worry about termites, maybe liquid polyurethane would be the thing? Maybe you could find a custom furniture builder and ask some advice -- you probably have lots of them around there, among the Mennonite population.

Of course, they may not have websites.

Or... y'know... phones.

But if you can find one, I'm sure he can help!

Do you have a termite problem in Ohio? I would enjoy as a planted for a year or two. Watering the plants will hasten the decomposition. Just don't plant anything with a large root ball as there will not be enough room for the roots. Perhaps Verbena or the Improved Wave petunia selctions.

I like that log! When you have it planted, please take some pictures!

Any ideas on what to put on the sides to keep dirt in?

I have seen sphagnum moss used to line wire planters. Perhaps that might help hold in dirt and moisture.

OHHH...good idea! Thanks .

Great idea for a planter! I agree with Gail that it probably won't last for many years, but definitely worth having for a while. That knothole would look cool with a plant growing through it.

You could cut a couple pieces of chicken wire and fit them into the ends too.

I should have went with the chicken wire.

I put coco fiber from my old hanging basket there and the birdies all took it for their nests!!!

I am still unsure what to plant in the knot hole.

If you do put some flowers or plants inside, could you take a few photos to share with us? I would love to see it with something inside
