Hi, we just got our first kitten about two weeks ago. She wouldn't eat so we had to take her to the vet and start injecting food. But now, she can't get enough. She's about 19 weeks old and on the side of the can, it says up to 20 weeks feed as much as she'll eat. But she'll eat five cans a day or more if I let her (we're feeding Wellness by the way). I think this contributed to the diarrhea she had the other day, because basically I was just feeding her whenever I thought she was hungry.

She'll meow desperately every time I go into the kitchen, try to jump into the refrigerator, etc. She devours her food when it's feeding time. I want to switch to four feedings daily with 2/3 of a can, which still comes out to slightly more than two cans and seems like quite a bit to me. I'm paranoid about her getting the runs again. Can anyone give me a good medium? I don't want to feed her so much that she gets indigestion/becomes obese, but I know kittens need to eat a lot to grow. Thanks for any advice.

Has she been treated for worms? That can often cause a kitten to feel hungry all the time.

Do you have dry food for her to munch on as well? At that age, we fed Tumbles canned 4 or 5 times a day, but he had dry food whenever he wanted. We fed Wellness kitten and EVO kitten/cat canned and he had a combination of Royal Canin dry and Taste of the Wild dry.

As far as I know, she was tested for pretty much everything when she went to the vet and her stool sample came back negative. And she's only nuts for the wet food. I tried to leave out some dry food, and she wouldn't touch it. Should I just go with the 2/3 can per pound per day? (She's four pounds).

I personally feed kittens all they will eat up to the time that they are about one year old. Sometimes Morey and Mitch will still eat about a pound of food a day (they are fed a raw diet) and are now eight months old. They are fed all they can eat 3-4 times per day.

Be glad that she won't eat dry food! That is one smart cat

Eh, they are growing. As long as the vet has checked em out ok and they are gaining weight, I wouldn't worry.

Personally, I believe in free feeding dry and putting out wet 2-3 times a day while they are kittens.

Thanks for the input!

I figured it was fine to just let her eat, but she's my first cat and I don't want to mess anything up!
