Feral Maggie: My feral Maggie who has lived with us for about three months is getting more skittish. She always joins my cats for their evening meal of moist canned food. Last night she did not join them. She loves to eat so has never missed a meal in the past. She stopped living under the bed and started hanging out in the living room and sat on top of a pillow and seemed quite content. Now she is back under the bed. She no longer sits on the kitty platform to look out the window.I am especially worried because I will be away for two weeks and a petsitter will be caring for them.

My dominant neutered male can intimidate her and perhaps while I am at work things are going on that I am not aware of.

I am very concerned about her while I am away.

What could be going on to change her behavior?

sometimes when a cat is sick they will do that . Have you notice any other problems besite she is back under the bed ? Then on the other hand cats change in their way to . One of my Siamese cat like to stay in my bedroom for a month , then she comes out and stay in the cathouse for a month and don't even come insite . It may be just a mood swing , or she may feel that something is going on with you going away for a while and cats are sometimes very sensitive to that .You need to watch her a little more to see if she eats and trink right and if not you may need to go to the Vet with her just to make sure she is ok .

Well... right now you only have one night of not eating behind you. But any time one of our cats has skipped just one meal it turned out they were sick. Ours are feral rescues, and they like to hide when they don't feel well. I'd take her to the vet, especially if you're going on vacation. It will be very, very difficult for a petsitter to know if she's sick.

If she gets the OK from the vet, then it's probably that she senses you're leaving. We've only headed out once for a long weekend since we've had "the kids" here... but they could tell several days in advance, and everyone started acting real weird.
