Fax machine question

I know nothing about fax machines.

If I fax something to someone, can they tell where (the place of business) it was sent from?
Yes. It often will print that information on the top of the page. I used to send faxes from Staples all the time when I was job searching. I remember when we were hiring at one of my jobs and we got a resume faxed over from another doctor's office! Like the person made it obvious to us they were sending it from the job they wanted to get out of. I don't know that they ever got a call for an interview either. :o\\

Unless things have changed in the last few years, all faxes sent in the U.S. are required by law to bear the (telephone or fax) number of the machine transmitting.

Yes. If I wanted to send out something like a resume, I'd send it from somewhere other than the fax in my office.

You are required to have the outgoing number on the fax. But you can also sign up for internet fax services that don't require a fax machine. Most services have a 30 day free trial. You send the fax through your email and on the other end it comes out just like a fax.

The services run from $10.00 a month to even free (but with ads on the coversheets).

Or, if your printer at home has a fax (and you may not have realized it when you bought it), you can fax it from home! :-D That's how I was doing it towards the end of my career when I had just moved back to the homeland from Los Angeles.

Warmly,

(If you have a keypad on your printer, you have a fax in your printer). :-D

I need to fax a job application and possibly a resume and/or cover letter. The easiest access I have to a fax machine is at the school where my aunt works. Do you think there would be a problem if I faxed the application from there (I know the school employees won't mind)? I don't know if the employer would frown upon that or not. On the other hand, since I don't have any non related references, maybe it would be a good thing.

I'm certain that would not be a problem at all.

Another thing you could do is to e-mail your Resume and other paperwork to any friend who has a fax machine and they can fax it from their fax machine! That works as well! :-D

Ohhhh, you'll need non-related references; can you have a couple of teachers and maybe a counselor from school (or the principal) write you letters of reference? (If so, make a LOT of copies for future interviews). In my job when I used to work, we could not include family or friends as references at all.

Warmly,

Julie O'

One thing about fax machines is even if you get a confirmation that it went through does not mean it actually went through. It could have come through garbled on the other end.

People fax things to us all the time and do not follow up to see if we received it. Then call months later to see why the were defaulted on their student loan. As if the bills and calls would not tell them that we didn't receive the fax.

But if I need to fax something, the rental office where I live will fax it for me.

What would be the best way to see if they got it? They don't have a business phone number yet. There is an email address on their website.

Sadly, I don't have any references at all, other than relatives. I'm trying to determine what I should do. I think it would look bad if I didn't have at least one reference. But I'm afraid that if I use a relative, they would know. I thought about listing a relative and then in the other references spaces I could give a brief explanation as to why I don't have any other references. It's because I haven't had time to form a relationship with anyone at all due to family illnesses and me helping out. If that's the excuse I use, I would word it better than that. I just don't know if I should do that. BTW, this is my first job despite being in my late 20's.

If you have Windows 7 or XP and a scanning printer and a connection to a phone, you have a fax machine. If you have Vista, you would have to install a fax program.
