Well the number of reports of adverse reactions to flea and tick treatments has been increasing dramatically in recent years which means the pressure from consumer protection litigation is only now mounting against government regulators to respond seriously.

And the EPA has announced they are in the process of developing stronger warning labels and testing/toxicity requirements for OTC pesticide products. Unfortunately this won't cover flea collars, although I think the company has stopped shipping some (flea spray ?) products to stores.

It isn't only more stringent federal standards, though. The vet community, as a whole, has also been very slow to come around to the dangers of toxic chemicals. So get everyone involved. And never assume as they sometimes do that because something is on the market, that it's safe.

I'm SO sorry about what happened to Tony.
But you can stop any more poor cats or owners from suffering. Just look around. Maybe sign your name in for a class action lawsuit. There are plenty of ways to be part of some sort of action or cause to stop this (and any) company from selling crappy ingredients that range from poor to dangerous !

Rest in peace, Tony.
I'm sure you're having a grand old time across the Rainbow Bridge!

As for Hartz- that company absolutely terrifies me. To hear that they're happy to just give out "guilt money" to keep people quiet and will keep on making those horrible products... it's sickening, is what it is. I'm contemplating writing a big fat (anonymous :|) letter to the editor of my local newspaper with some statistics in it and see if any good can come of it.

I don't, for the life of me, understand WHY these products are still on shelves!

I am so, SO sorry for the loss of your precious Tony.

My own brother, who KNEW better, almost lost his cat, Lucifer, after using Hartz. He didn't believe me when I told him it is potentially very deadly. Lucifer convulsed, and his heart stopped. They literally performed kitty CPR to get him back and that GOODNESS he is fine now, but it was such a close call.

Tell every cat lover you know about these products , if you belong to any other forums tell people about sites warning people ,like hartz kills . com and hartz victims.org , if each one of us tells ten people do you realize how many animals we could save dieing a agonizeing death , Complain to the Epa ask them why there letting so may animals die , I loved that cat , and you know what he loved me and he didnt deserve to die like that . I for one am not gonna let him die in vein if i can save one of your cats from dieing , or save you from haveing to witness your cat seizure and die on his on saliva and blood it will be worth it

I have already reposted on my Facebook and asked people to share. I really did not know this was still going on! HOW do we get these products pulled from the shelves? I think I heard about this maybe some 5+ years ago.

I'm so sorry for you loss. That is so horrible.

I was just at Walmart tonight and browsed through the pet cat section. Hartz flea products lined the shelves. It made me cringe and so angry.
I wanted to take my hands and run them over the shelves and knock all of the product to the floor. I, too, cannot believe Hartz still stands behind their deadly products. It is just shocking to me and I fear for other's who don't know about the risks.

Many people have come forward with their stories...but how many people did not? If EVERYONE did, maybe the EPA would step in more? I kept what happened to Parker to myself and the vet. Figured I can't take down the big guys anyway...The night before last a friend was telling me how he put some on his little dog and he started having seizures within moments. Another untold story.

You'd think their warning labels would at least be more descriptive. They should be required by law to list all the serious side effects that can occur, just like human drugs, ointments, etc.

"May cause seizures, hyperactivity, elevated heart rate, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, twitching, foaming at the mouth, weakness, fur loss, burns and death." Is what every package should say...

Bet they'd see a slight decrease in sales then.

IF you use pet products that are manufactured safe for dogs and cats, you run the risk of putting your cat into great harm. Doesn't matter who makes it, they are NOT safe. Specifically- flea and tick products, shampoos and flea collars. Dog shampoos typically contain tea tree oil which is very toxic to cats, yet you will find pet shampoos on the market 'safe' for dogs and cats that contain this.

It's not just Hartz and if you read the labels and the accompanying literature with each product, you will see where they will caution you. The best thing to do is get your products through your vet- that way you are covered should something go terribly wrong.

That's just horrible. I saw my first cat dying a natural death and it already broke me into pieces, I can't imagine how it would have been if I actually caused the death.

Jeez, there's probably no real comfort for you at the moment, nothing to say about that anyway, I mean you know that you didn't know it and you'd never harmed your sweetheart willingly, but I would feel responsible as well.

Hope you have something to manage suffering the sorrowful days that are to come. If it gives you any help at all, the pain will disappear deep down in your soul and you'll be able to walk the world without thinking too much of it, but no illusions, you'll never forget it and you'll never stop feeling bad about it. At least that's my experience.
