So I posted maybe a couple weeks ago about two strays my husband and I found living outside our home. We brought them into our guest room and have kept them locked in there with food and water and go up a few times a day to play with them.
We usually open the windows during the day and let them get some air and close them at night bc its cold. It has gotten warm recently so we opened the window last night about 6 inches. We checked on them before bed and this morning I wasn't able to get up there until about 11am...when I got into the room I couldn't find her. It is not a big room!! I went to open the window higher for some more air and noticed the screen looked weird....the bottom corner of the screen was broken open! This room is on the 2nd floor of our house and a straight drop down. And torti is now missing. I have searched all over...I can't find her anywhere. I am worried she is hurt...I can't imagine her not hurting herself from 2 stories up?? I checked all her old outside hiding places and she is nowhere! she never even seemed interested in the windows before.
And now I am freaking out!! We sleep with our bedroom windows open every single night...what if one of my resident kitties ends up pushing on a screen enough overnight to open it and gets out?? My 3 youngest cats LOVE windows and sit in them all the time...Has anyone had a cat break a screen?? Are there any precautions I can take so it doesn't happen to other screens? I am not worried at all about the screens. I am worried about my cats!

I'm sooooo sorry that torti is missing. I hope you find her or she comes back soon!

I can only imagine how worried you are right now. Sending you and torti lots of luck and love vibes

As far as the window being open, I too was wondering if Luna would try to escape. When I am in her room I will keep the window opened more than when I leave the room. Also if I'm not going to be in her room for a while, I just close it completely. You could say I'm a little paranoid. Also when I do leave the room and window opened, I only have it cracked maybe 2 inches.

If your other cats are just regular house cats and not feral I don't think they would try to escape as easily, but you never know.

I hope everything works out and your able to find torti!!

Good Luck!!

Also, don't beat yourself up too much either, you are doing a wonderful thing for your kitties!!!

Please do not be too hard on yourself. You have done a great deed in helping these cats and sometimes these things just happen. Like the saying goes, "hind sight" but that is why there is that saying, everyone thinks they should have done something different.

I am sorry torti got loose. Will have to wait and see if she returns for food. I am sure she is alright and landed on her feet.
. They do make grills for screens that are pet safe. I will have to install some this summer, because I have new older kittens this year who are crazy for birds outside and I can see them pushing out screens.

Mega for you and torti. I am sure she will be alright and might be back for food.

I think that I will not open window in room where mine are, I'm too scared to open the window because they are really good in escaping, I'm also thinking of putting some protection to windows so they can't get hurt if trying to run trough window glass, there is 3 glasses at my windows, so I don't think they will go trough, but getting glass broken could mean lot of injuries.

I have seen cats doing things that I never thought they could do, so I try to overestimate them, maybe that way I can avoid accidents, but cats are pretty difficult to overestimate, but very easy to underestimate, they just don't show their abilities to public, clever ones as they are.

Once cat broke plexiglass window (stronger than normal glass window) at my warehouse, jumped right trough it, weighting several pounds and going at their top speed there is quite bit of impact energy in them. That was result of cat fight between two feral males, one escaped in a hurry and forgot the window.

If possible, put food out, maybe cat will return when it founds how much better it was inside, it can take time, but as it will remember when getting hungry.

We have gone out looking for her and have continued to put food on our doorstep, which is a daily ritual, and how we caught her the first time.
I think her getting loose is my fault.
I feel awful. The two cats had been locked up in the guest room almost two weeks. There was dry food crunched into the carpet....cat hair everywhere. The room needed vacuumed bad. I could have waited for hubby to come home but I didn't. I had been having a rough day, the daycare kids were throwing huge tantrums and it was just crazy...my resident cats were going crazy, I was just stressed and wan ted to get it over with. So instead of waiting for him to get cats out of our bedroom (where they hide under the bed) and put the strays in there, I just vacuumed with the two cats in the room. The were hiding under the futon, with a sheet hanging down to the floor because they like to have hiding space...and at one point I got too close to it and torti jumped out onto the desk on the other side of the room and then ran under the desk and hid until I stopped vacuuming, got pulled her out and held her for awhile.
At some point that night/early yesterday morning she left. I think I scared her so bad with the vacuum that she felt she was in danger and had to get out. I am so mad at myself for it and so worried about her.
Still have not seen her. I guess the good thing is that the injured black kitty didn't try to get out even though he must have had time to try...
Thanks for the vibes. I was so close to having a home for torti too and I had to write them and say she is currently missing.

I can only imagine how you feel right now, but its not your fault and please don't be so hard on yourself. I will be sending good vibes, luck vibes, and love vibes to you and torti all day!!

Once she gets hungry she will return. You have been her caretaker for a while, so I'm sure she won't forget it.

She may just be a little shaken up from the fall and just hiding somewhere near by.

Good Luck!!!

Oh please don't beat yourself up like this. Some days can be so hectic in our lives with everything, kids, family, job, house cleaning, cooking, laundry, the list goes on....... It is alright!!! You went above and beyond what most people would do and please know that torti will be alright. I bet she will be back and maybe she also has other places in the area that she is familiar with and has other "feeding stations" too. I am glad your black kitty stayed put too. Your heart is in the right place and we can't predict things like this. It is not you fault or the fault of the vacuum
. Just hang in there. We have all had "stuff" happen in hind sight and you are not alone here
.
You need a hug and some sunshine
