Know that all of you here will relate to this sad story. I brought 'Rusty' home a few years ago. He had been abandoned by a neighbour in the country and had been out all one winter. He quickly adjusted to our home and the other three cats we had at that time.

About two weeks ago, he did not appear in my bedroom in the early morning like he used to do. He seemed more listless and I noticed that he had a bad canine tooth and his lips looked pale. Took him to my vet last Thursday. She took out the tooth which was loose & gave him an antibiotic shot. She also took blood tests which showed he had an abnormal white blood count. She said this could be from the infection caused by the tooth or else he might have feline leukemia. Brought him home hoping to see an improvement over the next day or so, but he lost his appetite and I tried everything I could think of to tempt him, with little success. Was going to take him back to the vets on Tuesday, but on the Monday night about seven, he passed away. I had put him on my bed and had given him some water in a syringe. A few minutes later he started to change positions on the bed and then started yowling. I grabbed him and carried him downstairs as I thought first to get him outside into the fresh air. He was still yowling and I put him on the front doorstep with a small blanket covering his lower body. Soon after he stopped struggling and breathing. - I am broken hearted, as he was the most loving and sweet companion. Guess I could get my head around it if it had been a peaceful passing, but I am afraid that he suffered terribly. Now I am wondering, 'If, if, if'! Last Thursday the vet told me that he could have contracted the leukemia virus years ago when he was outside. - Whenever I lose a beloved pet I whip myself for weeks afterwards.

BTW, I have been a member here for some years, but for some reason when I tried to log on I was told my user name and password were 'incorrect', so I re-registered.

Thanks so much for listening to my sad story. I know all of you here are most sympathetic.

Sincerely,
Christine

I am so sorry for your loss, I do know how it feels to lose a beloved kitty, I lost two of them to FIV, I also have one in the hospital now, with a bad heart and bladder issues. Its only today that I heard positive news about him. Its so very hard to love them so much and lose them. My heart goes out to you. But I firmly believe, he is in a better place and is very happy on the other side of the bridge
. My Prayers are for you both.

Aw, Christine, I am so sorry you lost your little buddy Rusty. We all beat ourselves up when we loose one of our kitties. You are in good company here.

I will say a prayer for him tonight.

I am sure he is with all of our little buddies too....and in the care of the angels.

God bless.

Christine, that is so tragic and sp devastating what you went through with Rusty. Please know that we ALL beat ourselves up for the what ifs and the I should haves, when we lose our pets. This was a very quick and unexpected death for Rusty and I am just thankful you were there with him that night while he passed on instead of being totally alone in the house. Hard as it was to see, you were with him and he loved you so much.
I am so sorry for your huge loss.

What a difficult thing for you to have to witness. But it was a blessing for Rusty to have you there with him so he didn't have to be alone and afraid. It sounds like it happened quickly, so he didn't suffer too long. I'm really sorry you lost him.

We all feel that we failed our dear animals when they pass. They look to us for everything, and we do our best to protect them from all harm. But, still, we can't always and forever. It's hard to stand.

Rest in peace, well loved Rusty.
