but until then, does anyone know how to tell if a 5 day old kitten is constipated?

I'm fostering a 5 day old kitten that is a bottle-feeder due to its mother's death (hit by car) and he/she hasn't pooped in 3 feedings..

pooped a tiny bit at 8:45 pm
ate 9 pm

ate at 11pm
peed at 11pm

peed at 2am
ate 2am

peed 5am
ate at 5am

im very worried because i know he/she needs to eat regularly but if nothing comes out how can more go in properly?

Before I try to answer your question, do you know the excellent site www.rescue-kitten.com? About helping small kittens, especielly - orphan kittens. You will find most answers there!

I presume you are stimulating the behind and the tummy? I think the latest proposal is to use simply your finger with some oil on... And wash of the finger afterwards.

There had been cases here when a kitten didnt did nr 2 several days, and the vet in charge wasnt alarmed. Although most kittens do theirs regurarly, both nr 1 and 2.

While you wait for your own vet, try with this internet-vet marketing their free service in ads here on our site. (tell us how it went)

Keep us updated!

Good luck!

Oops! they arent really free. I wanted to tried them out, so I told them your situation, as an example.
The automato asked if I was prepared to pay 144 kronas, ie about 25 dollars. they said I would pay only if I was satisfied with the answer... If not satisfied, they would repay my payment.
So I did broke off there...

But you can phone any vet or vet hospital you think does answer for free. Very many do.
Say in another time-zone if it is night at yours place..

Good luck!

It is very very common for bottle feeding kittens to become constipated- my guess is it's the formula vs. real milk. The site stefan gave you will give you tons of info, but you don't have to worry too much if the kitten is not acting sick and you're going to the vet in the morning

Good luck!

Thanks everyone!! I had posted that around 6am my time I believe.. had been up almost all night trying to get him/her to poop.. I ended up taking him to the vet and he was very very constipated. They gave him an enema and showed me how to do it just in case I need to. (Thanks for the awesome link by the way!) I also had the opportunity to volunteer at a shelter today with a friend of mine who currently has bottle feeder puppies (she's had the same issue with them) Here's a pic of our constipated lil ones!

the puppy is another foster home's bottle feeder. We try to keep a minimum 3 bottle feeders per home due to safety reasons if possible. Sometimes our more seasoned volunteers will have up to litters of 11 with bottle feeding, but that sort of thing has only happened twice in the 9 years I've been a volunteer...

I'm very happy to announce that Snowball kitten is now Purring after every meal. I believe we have success with one happy little kitten. Our vet does believe he is younger than what was originally expected and puts the age at about 4 or 5 days now..
