I'm trying to get more canned food in my cats' diet. In the past, I gave them 2 13-oz cans at night, which they rarely finished (which made the dogs very happy, but me, not so much), and just kept a big pan of dry food out at all times. But most of them are at least a little bit overweight, and they are getting older and I want to keep them hydrated. So I'm trying something different. For the last week, I've done it like this: I get home from work about 10 am (for "lunch"), and put out 2 cans. I get home from work at 5 pm and put out 5 cups of dry food (this is for 19 cats; 1 cat lives in the bedroom and is fed separately). Then at bedtime (10-midnight), another 2 cans.
I think this is enough; when I feed all canned food, they eat 9 cans a day when allowed all they want. And they still aren't finishing what I put out, even the dry food has some left over when I go to bed. They are doing better about finishing their canned food, but there's always a few bites left on the plates to make the dogs happy. BUT--the cats are mad about this change. They're constantly pestering me to fill their dry food dish, even when there's a fresh plate of canned food for them.
So, does this sound like a good feeding plan? Any suggestions or advice? How long will it take for the kitties to get used to not having dry food available all the time and stop pestering me?
