Now it's Jack's turn for the vet visit!!

It started last night, and the only way l can describe it is you know when you get that feeling that you want to sneeze but can't?, then you finally have a sneeze. That's what he's doing. The only time it stops is when he's sleeping?.

He's giving short breaths out his mouth then finally manages a sneeze, but poor baby he must be fed up The girls have sneezed several times themselves last night and this morning, but nothing like how Jack is.

Sooooo, hopefully the surgery will fit us in this morning first thing

Other than their yearly checkups i've never had them to the vet in under a few months

Susan,

This is the time of the year for these colds. I have several cats sneezing right now and one who I hope will be put on the schedule in the morning because he is having problems with his breathing he is so congested. I have him upstairs with the vaporizer going. When I try to give him the medicine- he gags it up and lurches his throat so I suspect his tonsils are swollen. With Shell having calici, the sneezes are worrisome but my vet doesn't seem all that concerned so I am trying not to worry.

MA I wondered about that as well as hay fever type symptoms?. There's no discharge from his eyes or nose though?
Poor Jack. It might be hay fever, which seems bad this year. I took Miezi to the vets' office yesterday because of sneezing and irritated eyes, something she's never had before. The vet says allergies, and prescribed eye drops 2x a day and an antihistamine as needed. Thank goodness for squirt cheese!

I hope it is something like that and nothing sinister in his nose? We've been fitted in so were on our way now!
Do you give him cat grass? I've heard of cats getting a blade of grass stuck in their nose.

He's got a mild case of Bordatella, which is the feline version of Kennel cough.

His temperature was normal but he said his throat was slightly inflamed, so he's had two injections which hopefully should sort him out, but if he's no better by Saturday l have to take him back. He said there was no obstructions/growths up his nose either which is what l was worried about.

He wasn't overly concerned with the girls sneezing and explained that it's very similar to us getting colds etc.. or being a bit run down. But looking at the internet it says it's very contagious?. He did tell me not to look at the internet as well

I asked him to give Jack his yearly check up now because Jack shakes when we go to the vets so l didn't want to put him through anymore stress The good news is other than this problem he's fine, even his heart murmur is still very faint.

No, he asked were they sneezing as bad as what Jack was but they weren't, so he didn't seem worried.

I came home from work just after 2.p.m and went straight upstairs because l knew where he would be, and that's under my duvet where he always goes if he gets scared whenever anyone comes to the house.

I did the usual which was to gently left the duvet back just so l could see him and he softly hissed at me twice His eyes were huge like he was still scared, so l spoke to him gently and scritched his ears where he started giving me slow blinkies I just put the duvet back and left him because l knew he would come down when he was ready.

Now, 4 1/2 hours later l was watching t.v. with Rosie fast asleep on my legs and Jack came slinking down. Rosie woke up and looked at him and Jack hissed at her so she hissed back and ran in the conservatory. Jack's tail was puffed up but he just sat staring through at her. 15 minutes later Rosie came in slowly and hissed at him again, Jack hissed back and growled at her, so Rosie ran off again.

Now Jack's gone back upstairs.

What's that all about?????????. Just before l put him in the carrier this morning he was snuggled up with Rosie as usual, and now it's like they hate each other
post #14 of 35
could he not just be feeling vunerable still because he is poorly

or could be be trying to say there could be something wrong with Rosie like shes caught it to?

Hows he been with Sophie?

Poor boy! Sending lots and lots of healing vibes!!!

So far as the hissing, maybe Jack smells differently to her since the vet visit?

Susan, I just looked up Bordatella (I know....he said to not Google, but Google is our friend!!). It does say it is highly contagious.

Several articles I found also state that coughing in a cat is NEVER normal and that any cat who is coughing should be investigated for pneumonia, heart failure, asthma, and Bordatellosis.

All of them stated that if one cat is being treated for it (even without having had the tracheal washings done), that all cats in the household should be treated for it in order to prevent reinfecting each other.

The treatment is Amoxicillin for 21 full days, for each cat in the household.

Here is one article

And another

My sisters just said that. He's back down and curled up beside me, so i'm guessing it's because he feels off colour still.

Sophie has been in the conservatory all afternoon, so they've never really seen each other

My vet asked me how Rosie and Sophie were and although they sneezed this morning they've been fine since i got back home after 2.p.m.. I saw those articles this morning when i got back to work, but Jack hasn't been coughing, it's just sneezing

The injections he was given seem to be kicking in because he's settled down a lot since this morning.

I trust my vet, but i'm keeping a close eye on them all and the floors are being disinfected tomorrow as well as an added precaution.

He's probably upset from the vet visit and smells "off" to Rosie. Lots of "get well soon" for him!

September is a long way off. Go and have fun!!! I'm sure you have a very responsible person looking after your kids.

Time to break our the pure vanilla extract Susan and dab that on your kitties. At the vets there are all sorts of stress pheremones in the air from all the cats beforehand. Some of these settle on the fur and change the signature scent of your cat. Also, when they are ill, their signature scent changes as well, so they become "aliens" in the house to the other cats. If you wear a signature scent- a favorite perfume the cats are used to- you can spray that in the air ahead of you, stick your hands into the mist, rub them together then rub all the cats so they smell like you. The hissing will cease.

I have and it's my best friend Pam just up the street. She comes in twice a day when i'm away, and she has all the vets details to hand, but i think i'm done with travelling abroad now after this I'll feel more comfortable just doing an overnight stay

Because they've always got along i don't have any vanilla, but i'm going to get some in just incase theres another episode, but i'm off to do the perfume trick now. Thanks MA!!

Oh no hun, I'm so sorry that Jack is under the weather, I hope he gets back to his old self real soon.xx
post #25 of 35
Great advice from Hissy Never heard of vanilla extract to cover up vet smells or our perfume. That is most likely what the hissing is about. I know how you feel about upcoming trips and worry about the kitties health while away. I rarely take vacations and it is usually to visit someone and I only go for five days, that is my limit. I am sure your kitties will be fine, especially by September

My vet also tells me to stop looking things up on the internet. He calls me the amateur internet vet. Sure hope Jack feels better very soon

Sorry Jack is under the weather, dear. Hope he's feeling better soon, and you get the hissing sorted.

Jack came downstairs about 9pm last night and he hissed at the girls and vice versa then went back upstairs. I kept the girls out of my bedroom much to their annoyance but l needed to make sure Jack wasn't stressed.

Both of us have hardly slept because although the sneezing has more or less stopped he's making more noises from his mouth which does sound like coughing now

He slept really close to me as usual, but I know he's poorly because he can purr the minute I look at him and scritch him but he's never made a sound

I'm keeping him locked in my room with his food, water etc... because I don't want any fights while I'm at work, but I'm going to ring Myron to ask about his coughing and if it should be like this because it wasn't this bad yesterday.

He's hardly ate or drank either

EDIT: Spoke to the vet and he said like any UR in humans it can take 7-10 days to clear, but he said if Jack hasn't ate or drank anything today he has to go back in tomorrow

Susan...
if Jack's symptoms continue after Saturday, you might want to discuss the possibility of seasonal allergies or even asthma with his vet.
Both are very treatable.

Sending the most powerful TCS vibes to Jack and calming thoughts to you.
It is never easy when our babies are no feeling well.

Sophie hates being locked out my bedroom!. She screamed at the door for about 30 minutes

I hand fed him and gave him water with the droplet again at bedtime, and he started to eat the food a bit, but i gave him lots of water. The huffing has practically stopped with just the odd sneeze, and he purred for the first time last night when l stroked him He ate a few kibbles and drank a little on his own this morning, so hopefully he's on the mend

Now Rosie was sneezing more than normal late last night and i noticed she had her mouth open slightly and her eyes were smarting like Jack's were. Sooooo guess who's going to the vet at 4.05.p.m this afternoon!.

Lei, l asked on Wednesday if it could be allergy related but he didn't think so. He was certain on the URI because Jack's throat was inflamed and he was gulping, now Rosie's doing the same, but whether that's why he wanted to see Jack on Saturday if there was no improvement i'm not sure?. I'll ask again though this afternoon.

Added get-well-soon for Ms. Rosie!
The bit about the inflammation sounds reasonable. My vet figured allergies rather than a respiratory infection for Miezi because there wasn't any inflammation, just some dry sneezing and pinkish, watery eyes, which the eye drops are taking care of.
