You use one plastic trash bag, maybe two a week and there are no simple alternatives as you can't really reuse a cloth bag that trash was in. A grocery trip usually involves about twenty plastic bags for me, and they are only used for about fifteen minutes, and there are alternatives.

However, if you take the bags and put them in a little baggie bucket, you can later bring them to Krogers or Walmart (others probably as well) and they will recycle your plastic bags for you.

Personally I go with paper bags when available as I can recycle those with my other paper more easily, and it doesn't have any handles that Wesley or Buttercup can get trapped in like with the plastic ones, and if anything they actually enjoy playing in them.

its the same place where human waste go. You don't recommend people flushing their own waste too? Unless there's something I am missing?

While I like to use shopping bags, they often have holes in them which causes litter to fall all over the floor as I'm bringing it to the garbage can. I have invested in a scoop that has bags in the handle and purchase the biodegradable bags so that I can put the waste in there before throwing it away, saving my floors from a litter explosion and saving the environment, too!

I use the Litter Locker like it

I scoop daily and put it in the grocery store bags and put it in the trash. I've looked at the Litter Locker and might take the plunge. I've heard good things about it.

I don't like using the plastic grocery bags but I do. I have to keep them put away in a cabinet that has been cat proofed because the cats like to play with them and will get tangled in them. I scoop 4 litter boxes at least once a day and sometimes more.

I use biodegradable doggie poop bags.

I do the grocery bag method too

I'm thinking of getting a tupperware box with a lid and lining it with the grocery bag. I keep the discards for a couple days (don't have enough grocery bags/feels wasteful) so this would be a nicer solution than a big bag of poop! lol! (I do double-up the bags, lol.)

The Litter Locker II is fantastic. Really keeps the odor in (spring loaded trap door and snap-shut lid) and I find the system overall to be really ingenious. Before, I would use plastic bags from the store but those are very thin and often have holes—plus they don't contain the odor well (even when tying off the tops).

I use Dr. Elsey's Precious Multi-Cat litter which I like quite a bit. Low-dust, good clumping.

I use plastic shopping bags, plastic bread bags, cereal bags, anything I can find. I hate having to do the bags, but I won't flush the litter down the toilet......we have an on-lot sewage system and I'm not doing anything to mess that up. We have enough issues with our septic system and the tanks that I don't feel comfortable flushing even flushable cat litter.

I mentioned in another thread that we completely empty and clean the litterboxes every week. Our trash people love us.....not.

I used to use just some cheap bags for the dollar store, but I recently switched to the Litter Locker II. I found a great deal through WAG.com, where all brand new customers get $10 off of their first order (no limit). So, for my first order, I got the Litter Locker II for $10.99 with an addt'l refill for $5.49, so with the coupon and shipping costs, I only paid $10 for the locker itself with 2 refills. If you have family near buy, then you can have them order to their homes and get 2 more refills for only $5 total (so $2.50/ea).

I got my Litter Locker though and LOVE IT! I emptied my first weeks worth of scoopings and when I opened it up, I could NOT smell anything! It is so worth the price and just watch for great sales. :)

I buy a cheap package of paper lunch bags, and scoop it in there, once a day, and walk across the hall to the compacter room and throw it down the chute. Pretty easy.

I scoop every night before going to bed. I buy plastic gallon ziploc bags from Wal-Mart ( their brand but they have the zipper, just a little over $2 for 40). I scoop the contents into them and throw it in my garbage can. Then thry go out when the garbage does. No yucky smell!  :)

I use Tidy Cats in one of my litter boxes, so have a big plastic bucket with lid available to me at all times. I put 2 layers of plastic grocery store bags into the bucket and scoop into the bags until they are full to the top. Then I tie both of the bags shut and put it in my outside garbage can. I go thru about 2 buckets worth of used litter a week around here. The Tidy Cats bin lid holds the smell in, so I don't dispose of the plastic bags until the bucket is full. I don't particularly like plastic so I use them sparingly. We use recycled bags when we grocery shop for the most part, until we run low then I ask for plastic in the store. The entire tidy cats bucket goes to the curb with the garbage cans when I open a new bucket.

Flushable litter may be a good idea, but I'm leary of it because we live in the country and are on septic. Having to fix long stretches of underground plumbing can be very costly.

I have the litter locker two, and I don't have to change the refill anywhere near once a month.  I got it when I got Annie back in May and I've gone through maybe 3 total rings?  So for what it's worth it's not as expensive as it seems.

We've had a Litter Locker (I) for well over a decade, which is next to the upstairs litterbox. The second litterbox is down in the cellar, so I just scoop into a sandwich bag and take it outside to the trash can. Unfortunately, the sandwich bags are plastic - little brown lunch bags aren't available here. The thin plastic shopping bags you get in the U.S. aren't used here, either. You bring your own bags to the store, or buy jute or heavy plastic ones.

Parsley, this is what we do. We have one of these airtight tupperware containers that suction locks. I put a grocery store plastic bag in it as a liner. I fill it with the waste for a couple days, and then I throw the bag away and start over. It saves me from using a million plastic bags and a million trips to the garbage can in the garage. It does not stink up the room either! It is pretty airtight.

Actually, I'd like to get a couple of these containers for my own use in the kitchen for storing food! I really like it!

biggrin.gif  yes it is and that's why we flush also.  In fact, we've been doing it for over 30 yrs. and our toilets are even older than that!
