There was nothing on TV for me at 8pm so I watched the CMA's for an hour. To my surprise while Carrie Underwood was singing out comes Steven Tyler all in white with his long coat and he sang with her. Then they both sang Walk This Way, the audience went wild. I was surprised to see Steven since he is in no way, shape or form a Country singer but he was there and rocked the house. I'm glad I caught that.

It probably had something to do with the fact that he's a judge on American Idol, and she was a contestant some years back. A promo kind of thing.

A little off-topic but still CMA-related...

I see Taylor Swift won Entertainer of the Year. I'm no fan of traditional country music, but I think she is the best thing to happen to music of ANY genre in a long time. Musically she's contemporary, while still having some "twang" appeal for the purists, and her lyrical phrasing is amazing; she'll combine verses that don't rhyme, or seemingly have any way of working together...but they always do.

And she just comes off as a nice person. Genuine. Yeah, she's had her boyfriend issues, but even those seem grounded compared to most celebrity breakups, and the way she parlays them into song don't come off as offensive.

She really is music's Golden Girl right now. She deserves every bit of attention she's gleaning from her talents.

The gap between country and rock isn't as huge as one may think nor is the gap between country, rock and the blues very large. Going way back, three of the largest early rock hits were by Carl Perkins (Blue Suede Shoes, long before Elvis), Conway Twitty (Only Make Believe) and Sonny James (Young Love). Marty Robbins regularly topped both charts until his death. Alan Jackson had a crossover with Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues and that was followed by Mark Chesnutt's cover of the Aerosmith classic I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. In the 70s and early 80s, the line became even more blurred with groups such as Alabama, Lynnard Skynnrd and The Oak Ridge Boys (remember Elvira?). Country music fans certainly do know Steven Tyler and not just from Idol. Aerosmith, like many blues based rock bands, show some music structure from the likes of Hank Williams, Roy Wills, etc. Not at all a stretch for the crowd to go crazy over Tyler.

I wish I'd seen that! I love it when the barriers break down and we're reminded that the roots of music are just a great big beautiful tangle!

Many years ago, Paul Simon hosted a gospel music special on TV, and he started by saying, "So you may wonder: why is a white Jewish guy doing a gospel special? Well, music is music, and a good song is a good song." Yeah!

Taylor Swift is coming to town in June and my son won tickets so his 9 year old daughter can go.

She is on cloud 9!

I was raised on country music and I love it.

I didn't get to watch last night. But I've become a country fan in the last 5 or so years. Some songs are a little more "country" than others at times; but overall I love it. So many country songs convey emotions sooo strongly you just get pulled right into it. I do love Taylor Swift; even though sometimes her expressions are....annoying maybe? But what I love is that she does come across genuine. I still need to get her latest album!

Totally agree with you and for the same reasons. I also have to put Katie Perry in this category, I love her music too.

I agree Taylor is incredibly talented, however, she doesn't appeal to me. For me, she songs really one type of song--romantic ballads. Not much variety for me. But, because of what is on the radio and due to this, I have not bought any of her albums so I cannot speak for non-radio songs.

Knowing this though, I am a huge country fan. I am going to see Sugarland in a few months

I'm really, really excited for the Sugarland concert! We are driving 6 or so hours to go (they aren't coming here) and bought into VIP tickets because of this. Heck, if you're going out of state to see a concert why not do it all the way--you know?

It's in the San Diego area so we are going to stay a few more days and enjoy the ocean too! YAYYYY
