I'm so excited! Our kids are taking a vacation to North Carolina to meet with friends there....eventually they'll probably move to the area. They were "this close" to moving a couple of years ago, but then the housing market died and the woman who was supposed to buy their house backed out. And at that point, they took the house off the market and decided to wait.

Anyway, DS is bringing our granddog to visit with us on Tuesday after work and she'll stay with us until next Monday night. Maggie is a gorgeous golden retriever who's almost as big as a small pony; she's really a big girl. I've been in love with her ever since they brought her home as a puppy and the runt of the litter. They've kenneled her in the past and I hated that. So when DS called to see if we could care for her, I immediately said, "Bring that girl home!'

It will be interesting, having a golden retriever and six cats in the house! DH will be taking a couple vacation days and then I'll be home the rest of the time with her. I'm leery of them all being alone in the house together; goodness knows what kind of a mess we'd come to, although Maggie is more laid-back than she used to be. But still.......

The cats are very much used to dogs as my niece and nephew both have dogs. My niece has a beautiful boxer and my nephew has a beautiful German shepherd and they've both been here. And my in-laws have Jackie, a pretty beagle and she's been here, too. But only on visits for a few hours or so. Never overnight and never for almost a week.

I'm looking forward to walking Maggie and to spending some time with her. She's such a lover....a big, big lover!

Wish us luck! I think we're going to need it!

You are in for a real treat this week. How fun. Your cats will love Maggie, especially since they are already used to big dogs and Maggie sounds wonderful. I do mid-day dog walking and one of my favorite clients is Fletcher a VERY large male golden. He is the best dog in the world to walk and very gentle and kind. Have a wonderful week and hope the weather is good by you so you can get out and walk.

I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with Maggie! She sounds lovely. Hard not to love a Golden really. Hope the cats aren't too upset with the arrangement.

Maggie is here. DS brought her to us last night. She came in the house and immediately flopped down next to DH by the couch.

BooBoo will not be intimidated (that's my boy!). He hissed at Maggie and let her know he was the boss and that was that. The other kids are scared. And poor Mollipop! She's so skittish, she doesn't know which way to go. This morning she didn't come out for breakfast; she just sat in the bedroom door looking out the hallway....I took her breakfast back to the bedroom for her. She did eat, so that's good. I was at the computer for a few minutes this morning and she came over to me, so she did leave the bedroom, even if was to skitter across the hallway into the computer room. But she's really nervous.

DH slept on the couch last night b/c it was Maggie's first night with us. She's such a sweetheart. But she has a nasty habit of chewing her paws to the point where they're open. Not good, so when she starts in we have to put an e-collar on her. She wore it overnight last night.

Maggie and I walked about a mile or so last night after DS left. Then she came back to the bedroom to lay to watch me on the elliptical and ab lounger. After that, I got on the floor with her and we watched some tv. She's going to be spoiled, I'm afraid as we are trying to give her a lot of attention.

But we're also giving our kids cuddles and skritches....we won't forget them! I'm hoping that, after a day or two, they'll all come out and at least say Hello. Wouldn't hold my breath on that, though. Mollipop did sleep in my arms last night, but she was very nervous and the slightest sound bothered her.

I will say that last night I had one of my best sleeps in months. Bootser was so beside herself that she never meowed once during the night. Usually she starts in meowing very early in the morning and that sets the other cats off. Not last night. Very quiet. And as a result? I overslept!
Only by about ten minutes or so.

How sweet this post is.
With the licking you can give a dose of benadryl. That will help some dogs. There is also a couple things you can safely spray to deter the licking. And the vet has a special tape that deters licking as well.
Of course, the collar of shame works just fine too

You sound like a great dog grandma! And she sounds like a great dog!

Awwww sounds like your having a great time!

Does she have allergies? I know that will make them chew their feet among other things.
