Cat started pooping outside of litter box

Thread Starter
We have 2 hairless cats, with 2 litter boxes that are routinely cleaned. The female cat has started pooping outside of the litter box. She still urinates inside the box, but for the past 2 months she has pooed outside the litter box almost every time. We clean it with soap & water to get rid of any smells, and we will sweep daily to get any excess litter off the ground as well. The boxes are cleaned daily or every other day, but no matter the consistency, she'll still do it.

Any ideas? I may call the vet tomorrow, as it's getting out of control. We were hoping it was a temporary thing, but it's ongoing, and embarassing to walk into the house with some friends to have the whole area smell like poop. My fiance loves the cats, but is talking about getting rid of her if this isn't something that can be fixed.

Any ideas? Could it be a medial issue where it hurts her to poo? She was fine with it for like a year and a half before this started.

There can be many causes for inappropriate elimination. For my coworker's cat, we figured out finally it was actually all caused by an aggressive female that was boxing in one of his males when he used the box.

I'd recommend this site as the suggestions are excellent IMO:

The problem could be solved by just adding another litter box. Some cats prefer one box for urinating and another one for defecating.

I know you said you have two litter boxes. I guess I would add another one to make it three boxes. Add the Cat Attract litter to the third box. If she checks out fine at the vet, this is what I would try. And maybe put it in another location in the house. Hope all goes well with the vet appt.

I meant to add another one to the two. I forgot to add that some cats also do not like sharing litter boxes.

She may be having trouble with constipation. If it hurts to poop she will blame the box.

A trip to the vet should be the first step. And an evaluation of her diet.

However:

it sounds to me like the boxes aren't being kept clean enough.

Add at least one more box and scoop them twice a day, every day, dump and scrub once a week. Most cats hate dirty litter boxes and many will refuse to use a box that has something already in it.

Please inform your fiance, nicely of course, that your cats are for life, not just until they have a problem, and that "getting rid of her" isn't an option. You'd better clear the air on that right now, because cats get sick and have special needs sometimes, and this kind of talk concerns me.
