Changing Dynamics

I've posted before about the ranking in the Cats' Household. Tolly is Top Cat, elected by Mazy and Jennie after Ootay left us for the Bridge almost two years ago. Still undisputed. All the girls adore him and defer to him, though he is just the sweetest thing, and it's beyond me how he keeps them in line.

Jennie is Second cat and Mazy has always seemed content to remain last but not least.

When Queen Eva came Jennie was very protective of her Second Cat status and Queen Eva was very submissive to Jennie. Mazy remained where she was, and has always been nothing but gentle with Queen Eva.

A few months passed and Queen Eva began playing really rough with Mazy. Thumping her to the floor. Mazy was very surprised but remained gentle with Queen Eva. Eventually Mazy did begin to brace herself and not allow Queen Eva to thump her to the floor, but still no aggression or roughness.

Jennie's method of playing is to ambush, swear and swat and chase. Tolly and Mazy know this and enjoy her Games, Tolly even teases her to box his ears and chase him in this way. Mazy, too enjoys these forays with Jennie. They kick up their heels and laugh as they run away.

Queen Eva at first would avoid eye contact and go into a Roll-and-Flop when playing with Jennie. But then, Queen Eva started challenging Jennie, holding her ground and batting back with her paws. Jennie was quite surprised at this. Gradually, not only did she bat with paws, she moved in, causing Jennie to either back off or run. Jennie has always been extremely gentle with Queen Eva, but the foul language when this happens would blister your ears.

Now I notice that Queen Eva is not waiting for Jennie to initiate the Game. Queen Eva is chasing and pouncing on Jennie! Jennie doesn't mind a little Chase Me Chase You, but does not like this frontal attack at all, and her language is at ear splitting decibels as she voices her disapproval. Queen Eva thinks it's hilarious.

In the mean time Mazy continues to brace herself against Queen Eva's floor thumping, and I notice that now Mazy has begun to Tumble Queen Eva. She's still gentle about it, the floor is not shaking, but she is definitely beginning to give it back.

And then....two nights ago I saw something that astounded me. I saw Mazy get ambushed by Jennie. That's normal. But, instead of running away laughing, Mazy turned and swatted back at Jennie. Jennie was so surprised she fell over backwards. I was careful not to laugh but can't help thinking....where will it all lead to?

One thing remains constant. Tolly is Top Cat, plays with them all, and no one, not even Jennie, ever challenges him.

Awwww, I love hearing about kitty antics. Its one of my favorite things is to watch my three interact and how their play changes. Sounds like everyone is playing with each other and having a good time with young wipper-snapper Queen Eva.

Sometimes I too can get concerned because Fiona is my top cat but sometimes it seems like the two boys may be trying to usurp her....but she always manages to bring them down a peg or two. She likes to play rough and be chased so she eggs them on alot....can't blame them for trying to take it too far....

I wish I could tell what's actually happening in my household. Sven was always the top cat, and he's trying to hang onto that spot, but he's old and sick (CRF) and Darko is constantly testing him. They never play together (Sven is above all that ), so I don't really know what Darko is doing when he reaches his paw out to Sven, but he does it every time Sven walks passed him. It's like he's baiting him . And Sven doesn't like it one bit. Lately he's been letting Darko know just how much he doesn't like it by his body language, and Darko stops. Funny thing about all this is...Darko has about 10 lbs on Sven!

With the other 3 (other than Sven), you never know who will be chasing who around the house. Callie may chase Stinkpot up the stairs, and then when they come back down, it'll be Stinkpot chasing Callie, followed by Darko.

Gotta love 'em

I call that Chase Me Chase You, and you know it's just Games. All of my cats play that. I love watching them.

Funny, many of my childhood memories involve watching cats play that Game.

Ootay was Top Cat right up to her end, all 4 pounds of her. (her healthy weight was 6.5 but she dwindled with her CRF and other illnesses) I thought sure Jennie or Mazy would take over, or maybe there'd be no alpha. But after a few weeks it became very clear that the two girls had elected Tolly Top Cat.

Darko may be teasing Sven, but on the other hand he may just be reaching out. Kind of a "Hey, how you doing, you feeling alright?" type of paw. Sven may not appreciate it, but that doesn't mean Darko's motives aren't pure.

I just wanted to say, I love the name Queen Eva. She reminds you every day that she is, in fact, royalty!

I like reading about "cat ranking" as well.

I don't know how the cats here are ranked right now. It was Sneaky on top, Holly on the bottom. Then Jasper was brought into the mix, and he hid in the garage and under the sofa for a month.

I don't think he's trying to get the "alpha" spot. Sneaky will walk by him and hiss if he gets too close. Someone also nicked him on the nose twice- I saw 2 scratch marks on his nose. And that's "not fair" he doesn't even have any front claws to defend himself.

I've caught him spraying around the house though I need to nip that behavior in the bud.

That' s funny! In our house, Callie is Princess Callie, since I'm officially the Queen of the Castle . However, Callie is definitely more spoiled than her meowmy.

Aw, thanks. Queen Eva let me know her name loud and clear.

When I first met her she was four weeks old and as I scritched her chin she gazed lovingly into my eyes and told me her name was Eva. (She was being called 'Lucky').

It took me another 4 weeks to get her out of the bad situation she was in, but that early Sunday morning as I drove her away from the bad place she informed me at the top of her voice (and she has a Very Loud Voice, even back then as a malnourished flea ridden 8 week old baby) anyway she told me in no uncertain terms that she is QUEEN Eva.

As for the changes happening here....I do find it very interesting that now that Queen Eva has started challenging Jennie, the other two are too. Just tonight, after Tolly teased Jennie into boxing his ears as he loves to do, instead of running away kicking up his heels, he turned around and swatted back.

I think they just like to make her swear.

LOL I love reading about ranks too and different kitty dynamics.
I was on another forum not long ago and I mentioned ranks and such and this member who claimed to be a cat behavior specialist just verbally rammed me into the ground about how i know nothing about cats and cats don't do that sort of thing, yada yada. I'm so glad I'm not alone in this thought. I don't think this person has had much experience in multiple cat households!
Anyway, Kuan Yin is our Top Cat. However, Solomon turned 1 yr. not long ago and already outweighs her and is just starting to realize it. Hestia has always been bottom of the totem and is happy to stay there, she doesn't want any fuss, she just wants a lap and scritches
Kuan Yin and Solomon have played right from the get go. Lately I think she is threatened how strong he is getting. I watch closely and she is giving it all she's got and Solomon will lay there, belly up and just nonchalantly push her away with his paws. The other day I saw her finally just walk away and lay down all tuckered out. Solomon is so good natured I don't think he really "gets it" he's just kind of like "Wow, that was fun" and then goes off to bat around a mouse. Then Kuan Yin will walk by Hestia and lift a paw which is enough to cause Hestia to run and hiss and swear. I guess she's reassuring herself at least she has power over THAT one I really don't know how this is gonna go. Solomon is so good natured I don't think he even realizes he's "winning"
