Hi Eveyone,
This is my first post here, and unfortunately it's not a cheerful one. I'm seeking advice and links to resources that can help out with a situation in or around the Las Vegas area.

One month ago, my step father in Vegas had a stroke and is currently in ICU. He was the primary caretaker of about 15 kitties all living in a home that he bought exclusively for them in 2005. He would drive to see them 2 or 3 times a day, sometimes napping there and going straight to work. These cats were his life! They are all mixed Persian/Himalayan kitties except for 3 of them that are either full bred Persian or Himalayan.
They are currently being taken care of by a neighbor who visits twice a day to feed them and offer company. My mom is also doing what she can to take care of them as well, but we have come to the heart wrenching conclusion that we must adopt these cats out. Given the condition that my step dad is in, it's highly unlikely that he will ever be able to care for them the way he did before. My mom is unable to do what he did considering she is asthmatic and also allergic to dander. This is what lead to my step dad buying a separate home for them in the first place. Back in 2001, my mom got a Persian kitten, and then decided to later get a Himalayan. Well, one can only guess what happened after that, considering that there's now 15 kitties. My mom realized several years later that she had bad allergies constantly, and developed breathing problems. She was diagnosed with asthma, and was told about being allergic to cats. Instead of giving up the kitties, they got their own home instead. I got one of them, Blondie, who I still have now.
My mom and I both agreed that we do not want these animals to be taken away somewhere only to be put down. It makes the both of us sick to our stomachs thinking about it. I used to know of a few sanctuaries in Las Vegas when I lived there before, but I looked them up online only to find that they are either closed, or refusing to take anymore animals because of already having so many. I'm also afraid that if we call the animal shelter for help, they will come out and assess the situation and possibly ticket or arrest my mom for having so many cats without a permit. I will be in Vegas from April 18th-26th and am hoping to get this taken care of while I'm there. Saying goodbye to them is going to be the hardest, most painful thing to do.
If anyone knows of any place in or around Las Vegas that can help, I would very much appreciate it. Perhaps there are some of you who live there who would be interested in adopting one of the kitties. Ideally, I would like to find a place that would adopt each and everyone of them out to loving homes.
Again, I appreciate any and all advice/help. Thank you kindly in advance.

Thank you so very much!

I'm planning on writing and explaining the situation. From what I read, it sure sounds like they will be able to help out, or at least direct me to a place that can.

Thanks again!

Just want to send my good wishes and prayers for all of these cats. I hope you can find a solution for them, and with LDG's suggestions, you might be able to come up with some assistance for sure. I am sorry about your step-father. I am sure he will be worried about the cats too. Good luck with finding homes

Big thanks for all of the advice! I was able to find about 8 different places to call when I get to Vegas.
I leave this coming Monday, and as it draws near I have an overwhelming sense of sadness. This is going to be so emotionally devastating for me, only because I know how much that my step dad loves these cats. It's difficult becuase in one sense, I'm angry at him for not taking into consideration what would happen to them if something ever happened to him. They are innocent, and it's our job as parents to ensure the safety and care of our animals-everything lies completely in our hands. They didn't choose this, so now I have to do what I can to ensure that these animals are taken care of. My biggest fear is that some of them may have to be put down. I know that there are a handful of them who are in ill health, and I'm afraid of what will happen to them. I've heard it's more challenging to find homes for older and/or sick animals. On top of that, in Vegas there is a serious overpopulation problem stemming from the home foreclosure crisis which makes for limited space in sanctuaries. It's all so, so sad and my heart literally aches-I get a pain in my stomach when I think of what's going to happen.
I will keep you all posted on the progress, and hopefully I will have the opportunity to convey good news...

You are going above and beyond what most would in this situation for these cats and can only imagine the burden you have taken on. You are doing the best you can for these cats and they will not be abandoned or left to fend for themselves. Sending you many, many prayers as you deal with this situation and those cats know you are trying to do the best for them under the circumstances.
