My cats Billy and Baby were neutered this morning. Billy is 1 yr old, and Baby is about 10 mos old. Billy is 7lbs and Baby is 9. Billy is blind. We held off a little because Billy was so little and we had no unaltered females, but it was time. We were worried about Billy bc of the blindness and leaving him somewhere strange for a few hours. They went in at 7am and came home at noon.
When they got home, we offered some canned food. Baby ate but Billy walked around the kitchen smelling everything, as if he was trying to get re-aquainted with the house. We let him sniff around awhile and he finally just layed down on the floor. The weird thing is that he was laying like he was sleeping but his eyes never closed. My husband took Billy to the couch and layed Billy on his chest....one of Billy's favorite things to do. Billy layed there but still never closed his eyes. For maybe 2 hours while my husband slept, Billy layed on him and probably only closed his eyes about half the time.
We have taken him to the food and he has not eaten. We have offered water, canned food, dry food, treats and he has not touched it. He just lays around.
Baby on the other hand is fine. Has eaten numerous times, is obviously not as active as normal but not as lethargic as Billy. Is it normal for some cats to recover pretty easily and others to have a harder time coming out of things and being active/hungry? Our vet accepts walk ins and is open for another hour and a half so I am trying to figure out if I should take him there.
*btw, we got them neutered at a low cost place and they are no longer open for me to call and ask any questions*

Each cat is different. When we had Buddy fixed last year, he didn't eat for well over 24 hours and he basically lived under the dining room table for 3 days. After that he came around to his usual self in about a day.

Best if you wait till tomorrow morning to see how your little one is doing. He might even need more time, possibly till the end of the day to start eating again. Even so, if he hasn't eaten anything at all by tomorrow morning, it would be a good idea to call the vet for advice.

They can have all kinds of problems after surgery, no appetite, vomiting, diarrhea. For some it takes much longer to go back to normal than for others.

A couple of other thoughts in addition to the above.

- His throat may be sore from the tube used during the procedure.
- He's blind, so he doesn't need to close his eyes to sleep. In fact, Ming Loy frequently sleeps with her eyes open, and she's not blind.
- The anesthesia does upset everything, and as has been pointed out, some kitties do take longer than others to recover.
- Billy relies much more heavily on smell because he's blind, and HE smells funny now, and that may also be affecting everything else he smells.

I agree, if he hasn't eaten by tomorrow, then call or take him in. But if you've got some wet food or baby food around, try touching a little to his lips and see if he responds. But it's not critical he eat just yet.

Billy spent a lot of the afternoon hiding and laying around. We left for a couple hours and came back and went to find him... my husband picked him up and was holding him at first upright on his shoulder with his belly area pressed against my husbands stomach. He moved him to cradle him on his back like you would a baby (Billy LOVES being held like this) and Billy growled when he moved him. As my husband petted him, Billy let out a couple of low growl/groans, especially when petted anywhere around his stomach....he also got agitated when moved at all. As we were discussing whether or not this was a normal sign or something to be concerned about, I noticed dark blood on my husbands shirt from when he held Billy against him. Billys "area" has some blood on it. We moved his leg apart a little to look at it and it is very dark...we can't tell if its blood or if it is supposed to look like that (he is a dark grey stripey cat). His fur around that area looks to be kinda wet too but we weren't worried about that before because Babys looked the same.
Is having a slightly bloody "area" and being agitated/inpain at being touched a normal symptom?? Is that doesnt stop by the morning our vet opens at 9am and we would take him over...if this sounds more serious then that, we know of a really good emergency vet we could take him to overnight. I just don't know if this is something that just happens to some cats...because all of our other cats are fixed and nothing like this has happened to any of them!!
Thanks for ANY help!!

We've had a lot of cats neutered, but I only know what happens to our indoor-only kitties. We have five males. That has never happened. I don't know if it's an emergency. I'd call the e-hospital to ask if it's an emergency.

I would definitely call the vet at least. As to his other behaviour, I agree with Laurie that the problem is almost certainly because of smell. Even sighted cats often behave differently after a vet visit. But for Billy, because his whole world is located by smell, he is very confused because hte vet smell on him and on baby is pervading everything else and he doesn't recognise anything. Once youy get this possible medical problem sorted, I am sure he will be back to normal in a few days. You might try rubbing him gently (when he will tolerate it) with some used towels or sweaty tshirts to get the house smell back on him.

The e-vet said a little bit of blood is okay, if it got to be a lot to bring him in asap. We laid a soft blanket on our bed between us last night and laid Billy between us for the night. This is where he usually sleeps, he loves it! He slept there most the night, disappearing a couple times but coming back. We noticed he did use the litter box in our room, and this morning he ate his wet food like normal and is now exploring the house a little more. So I think he took a little longer to recover from ths procedure. We have not noticed blood this morning which is a good sign! Thanks for your responses!! Every since one of my cats got sick last month, ever little weird thing the cats do scares me!! I

Oh good I am glad Billy is coming around. Poor baby, he was all confused.

You are preaching to the choir about weird things our cats do....I watch mine like a hawk and when something is amiss, I tend to freak!

for your two little guys!

just read this thread and was very glad to read that Billy is better today. Thank goodness. What a scare and I would have been quite alarmed as well. We do become more alert to the smallest things when we have had some scary experiences with our fur babies. Billy will be just fine
