Have you ever been really tired and headed for sleep when something unexpected happens and you know it's going to be a while before you get to crawl into that bed?

I was finally sleepy enough for bed late last night and I headed for the kitchen for a drink of water before turning in. My elbow knocked a water glass off of the counter, and it didn't break - it SHATTERED into a million tiny pieces! Usually, when I break glasses or dishes, they break into a few big pieces, maybe with some smaller ones, but this thing EXPLODED! I found some of the pieces 15 feet from where the glass hit the floor.

The kitties kept trying to get into the kitchen while I was sweeping (there's no door there), then I had to clean all the glass out of the broom and wet mop the floor to get all the itty-bitty pieces of glass, what a pain!

At least the kitchen floor is really clean this morning.

A similar thing happened a couple of years ago, it was late and my husband and I were about to turn in when we heard what sounded like a waterfall in the basement. Not a good sound! The hot water heater burst and water was pouring everywhere. Another late night...

Has this happened to you, too?

hehe...usually for me it's a cat puking... *sigh*

Lately my nights get messed up because my daughter has been waking and shes back to sleep hours before I am. So not fun.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
We replaced the dishes we're using in the RV, because we had those lovely, thin, plain white Corningware things. It was easy to fit all the sizes of plates and bowls into the one cupboard, all stacked up. But just like that glass you describe, they tend to completely shatter when dropped.
Now we have chunkier plates and bowls (and they take up heaps of room
) but they don't shatter when dropped. And we love drinking water out of a glass, and tea out of a cup... but we gave those up for plastic thermal mugs, because not only do those not break, they barely spill.

Unfortunately, those Corning dishes are the only little saucer bowls we've found that are just PERFECT for cat food feeding. I don't know WHAT I was thinking last weekend when I went to feed the ferals. Ok... it wasn't normally bed time for me, but I was exhausted, and this was the last thing I was doing before getting into bed.

I normally scoop up what the cats don't finish in their bowls into a paper bowl, and put it outside. For whatever reason, I had a couple cans of wet food and balanced one of the kitties' dishes on top, and went outside.

Yup. As I was closing the door, the bowl slid off and SHATTERED on the paver stones we've got under the steps. A million little slivers of glass everywere.
Thank goodness it's white glass. But I was out there in the cold and the dark for over an hour (do have a porch light) crawling around in the mud on my hands and knees picking up each little sliver of glass. The last thing I want is one of the ferals with a piece of glass in the foot! I had to pick up pieces only as far as six feet away. Thankfully the grass and mud outside of our little paver blocks stopped the "rush" of glass pieces skidding away.

But I had to get the tweezers out to get inbetween the paver stones.

*****************************

But yes, normally the interruption to getting to be would be a cat throwing up.

Ohhhhhh goodness, been there, done that!!

Our water pump burst one night, I was sound asleep and 9mths pregnant with Tysin. I woke up and heard gushing water, ran to the stairs and was like OMG. Woke Craig up and we headed downstairs, the minute I hit the basement my first contraction hit...

It's pretty funny now that I look back at it

Ohhhh absolutely! Actually the cats once knocked a wine glass off of the counter and the same thing happened. There were tiny shards EVERYWHERE. NOT fun.

I so know this! When I hear that warning sound of kitty puking, I jump up and move Maia off the carpet, comfort her and make sure shes all good. Why does it always happen when I'm sleeping?

Yes that's happened. Luckily the last dish that broke, broke before the kittens were here.
Lynxx

Yeppers!!!

I have a bad habit of snacking in bed, and one time I was hungry so I made myself a sandwich to take with me. When I was putting everything back, a bottle of ketchup (when they were still in glass bottles) fell out of the fridge and exploded all over the kitchen. Not only was there glass everywhere, right into the dining room and front hallway, but also ketchup up the sides of the counters.

Another time a casserole lid fell and did the same thing. Those lids explode into a gazillion pieces too.

And about a month ago I bought some Basil Tomato soup at Safeway. My favourite soup. It's in a plastic container. It fell out of the fridge and that's happened before, but this time it hit just right to open the plastic wrapper seal on the top and cracked the bottom. There was soup everywhere, thankfully no glass!

Oh and then there are those really cheap glass drinking glasses from The Dollar Store. I had 4, and over time each broke. One unfortunately slipped out of my hand and fell to the floor and did what yours did, complete shatter into microscopic bits.

I'm so freaked about stepping on glass that I pull out the vacuum and vacuum the area and then mop it with 2 different mops to make sure that the glass is gone.

And I know about trying to keep kitties out! Not the easiest of things because they can be so darn helpful!
