I did the same search, and I keep finding solo artists as well, or bands that have nothing to do whatsoever with Fleetwood Mac.

Well, I was thinking Pink Floyd, but that wouldn't calculate right.
And I'm too lazy to research into it right now. Maybe later I'll get more ambitious.

Well, I haven't followed things closely enough to figure out your actual age... and it occurs to me that your favorite band might not necessarily have been a current one at the time... but then you did say it was a band we wouldn't expect someone as old as you to know about... hmm. Let me try to cover the range:

The Carter Family
The Clash
Peter, Paul & Mary
The Glenn Miller Orchestra
The Byrds
Booker T & the MGs
The Drifters
The Kingston Trio
The Doors
The Everly Brothers
Jefferson Airplane
The Who
The Four Tops
Tommy James & The Shondells
The Brothers Four
Steppenwolf
The Swingle Singers
The Jackson Five
Buddy Holly & the Crickets
Cream
The Four Seasons
Les Paul & Mary Ford
Creedence Clearwater Revival
The New Christy Minstrels
Les Brown & His Band of Renown
The Temptations

I will now give hints to the hints already given:

Hint 1: Fleetwood Mac was the most popular mixed gender group of all time. (And Rumors was the biggest selling SINGLE DISC album of all time. Mixed gender groups are a rarity, expecially ones that can play more than 20 musical instruments.

Hint 2: Granny rhymes with...well, sort of...

If this is still open tomorrow, I will give the genre. And yes NOW. My favorite group in 34 years (since Rumors).
