My diabetic cat, Goofy, is due for his rabies shot.

He is soooooooo stressed out when I get the carrier out, even if its for another one of his buds. He will sulk all day.

I sure don't want to cause him any harm regarding his sugar. I know stress is a huge factor in the sugar spiking. My vet tech says, it will go back down when he gets home and calms down. I may take him to the free rabies clinic because it will be less of a wait than the vets. My vet is notorious for a huge wait.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on sugar? Will it come back down once he is calmed down? He has been doing so well, I sure hate to mess him up.

Thanks.

My previous cat, Mittens was diabetic. Sugar spikes aren't good but it's also hard to know what causes them. Have you tried spraying the cat carrier with feliway spray? I always do this the day before I have to take either of my girls to the vets and it really does help keep them chilled out.

I thought of doing that. I have the spray so anything might help.

I could have the vet come to the house. He did last year for 3 who didn't like travel. But, man, it was expensive. I don't think I will do that again.

I wish he could just give me the vaccine and I would do it myself. I am sure its illegal!

Thanks for your input!

My diabetic cat(or food controlled to not be diabetic
has not had his rabies shot since he was a kitten. Only those who go out get one.

But in general it does go down. I would not try to give extra insulin or anything since it should clear up soon enough on own. Do you home test?

A home vet that was around charged by the time spent and if 4 cats needed shots that would count as 1 call(aunt used it) if exams took longer then more time spent. She used to get them all in bedroom and get it done fast

Well it's good to know it does go down. No, I wouldn't give any extra insulin unless I asked the vet. No, I don't home test. I don't feel confident. He has been doing just great for over 2 years on 2 units in the am and 1 at night. I watch him, note any little changes. He plays, runs, has a good coat and eats good. None of my cats go out, but it is the law here and bats do get into houses. My 2 daughters have older houses. Both have found a bat inside. They can get between walls and they can get through the tiniest openings. My one daughters cat was not up on his rabies and they were on pins and needles until the bat was tested and came back negative. And my vet told me about a guy who had two indoor cats. A bat came down his chimney, got into the basement and the cats had contact with it. It was rabid.

So, there you have it. I am paranoid
I wish my vet charged by the time spent here. He doesn't even live that far away either.

Thanks for the info. Good to know it will prob go down.

Asked about the testing cause you could watch it drop to feel better

Ya we ended up with a bat issue while back. We had MAJOR snow and took in an outside cat it melted and let him out. not sure if the bat couldnt find food or what but i find it hours after the cats been outside. No fun. Could look up your state for the heck of it see if you are allowed to do your own rabies-mostly no but I know there are some states its ok.

Will this be a 3 year shot or 1 year shot? I just had my dog done I was more nervous then him(hes got some issues with ppl and I wanted the staff to walk away injury free)

for you and since you know his normals you'll be able to eyeball when hes normal. just keep eye on his breath to, if the sugars to high you will smell it there to(I dxed my guy the night before he was due to go in when I smelled THAT)

Oh yea, that nail polish remover odor! yuck! If it weren't for the bats! So you know how common they are. And we have them too....I don't know where they come from, but at dusk they start to appear. I totally understand your stress with the dog. I had a cat like that, Farley Velcro. It will be a 3 year, thank goodness!

When I met my boyfriend/now husband we used to park and watch them fly around the apartments we ended up moving into lol. Good luck with your trip to the vet

I hope he will be fine. I might would take him to the rabies clinic if it was less wait time. Stress of waiting makes it hard on cats.
