My kitten chews everything-particularly cords. I'm sure you know hoe expensive they run. I hide them as many as I can, when I can (wait to charge my Mac till I'm awake since those run $80).

I've wrapped them in electrical tape but many if the cord is ruined, so is the item.

I've seen the cable zipper but that isn't too realistic price wise & a lot of our cables are far tinier than it is for.

Our dvr cable is nearly shot.

She's not afraid of water, we have tried. She jumps in the shower with us (no joke).

We've tried putting rocks in a soda can and shake it, but it often happens when we are not home or are asleep.

Tried calling the vet for help, they were no help at all.

Help! Ideas?

There is a product you can buy, very inexpensive, goes by many names.
On Amazon.com, look up Pet Protector Cord.

Basically, its PVC tubing that is split so you can put it over your cords to protect them, it is also infused with citrus scent to deter them from chewing in the first place.

I've used it when my cats were younger and chewers, and my ex uses it for his two adult chewers, it does work.

I also have a cord chewing cat, and I hear ya on the expense thing. Aside from that I'm always afraid that he's going to electrocute himself!.

So far I've found 2 things that help. 1 is wrapping the cord in tinfoil, and the other is (when the cord is too long) is 2 sided tape.

Hopefully that helps you out too

I'll try the two-sided tape as I have some right now!

If all else fails, I'll dive in and purchase the Pet Protector things. I'd buy them now but I need something now and obviously, shipping has to be accounted for with those.

It's so frustrating. I'm pretty sure our HDTV cord is almost chewed through and if that happens, the TV has to be replaced. Dang.

Swing by lowes or home depot by the wire section.

They have various wire organizer options that will work, from round to rectangular cord cases w/ adhesive backing, to plastic tubing with a cut in it to feed the cable in, to spiral cut tubing which I prefer over it and is usually thicker plastic.

Once you have everything neat and tidy, you can just purchase any cheap citrus scent and spray the finished product. It should then smell and taste sufficiently horrible to boot, and also looks much nicer... I can't stand exposed wiring.

Alternatively, I believe theres a similar sticky/sour product available at petstores, but I'd be concerned w/ the mess that caused.

Just a note, I would advise against using any foil on wires already bitten, as even the tiniest hole can cause it to arc against the foil.

My husband and I purchased cord protectors at Lowe's when we had electronics and a lamp in my chinchilla room. We need to buy more now that I also have a cord chewing cat. I can totally relate to your pain. In one night my kitten (Lilly) chewed both ethernet cords on my router frying it, she chewed the power cord to my desktop computer screen, chewed the cord for the mouse and keyboard, the speakers for the computer and the printer usb cord. I have never had a cat do that before! So I was VERY surprised when I woke up that morning to find everything destroyed. We have most of our wires hidden now and she hasn't done it again, although one night she got behind the TV and chewed up the instructions that were taped on back there for plugging in media.

OMG! The cat could suffer a serious electrical burn or even death if he/she gets through a live cord. I've known two dogs that experienced this; one suffered serious burns to his mouth (I wasn't there when it happened), and the other was my German Shepherd, and he just screamed and ran for his life like I've never seen before! He weighed about 80lbs. A 10 lb. cat will probably die.

Please! Do whatever you need to do to keep the cat away from live electrical cords if they are disposed to biting through them!

Just thought I'd update. We went to Lowes and purchased some wraps for our cords and that seems to be doing well--thus far. We got 30 feet of cord + heavy duty scissors (to cut to size) for $15!

When we move we will do a longer term solution but moving is scheduled for the next 6 weeks or so... thus, this is a better temporary, safe solution.

Everyone seems to be happy! Even Lola...
