Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Thread Starter
My cat was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy the beginning of February. It was only discovered because my vet discovered a very faint heart murmur and sent me to a cardiologist. He will be 8 years old in April. The cardiologist put him on enalapril, atenolol, and plavix. I guess my question is what medications are/were your cats on? The plavix is VERY expensive and I'm having a hard time affording it and the doctor doesn't seem to understand this so its frustrating. I'm looking to see if maybe there are any other options out there. Thanks for any help!

My cat Patch has a Grade 4 murmur and an enlarged heart he was diagnosed with HCM also. He has had it for 3 years now he is 7 years old. My Vet gives him Atenolol and a 1/4 of low dose aspirin every third day. He's been on it for 3 years now.

My cat was diagnosed with HCM in the beginning of the year and currently takes 1/2 Benazepril and 1/4 Atenolol daily with a baby aspirin 2x a week. Luckily Walmart has them on the generic list for $4/month each so the cost isn't too great. Plavix's generic name is Clopidogrel and according to Wikipedia it is under patent protection until November 2011. If you can wait it out until then, it should get cheaper once it can be offered generically. Otherwise, maybe ask the doctor if you can use a baby aspirin in its place since I think Plavix is being prescribed to reduce the occurance of blood clots. The aspirin is supposed to thin the blood and perform the same function so the vet may be okay with it. Otherwise look into an online Canadian pharmacy. Regardless though, check with your vet before you change her medication. If your vet doesn't want to discuss it with you, then I would suggest finding a new vet.
