Not necessarily. I think that, had the President proposed such a unified system and put it into effect phased in beginning immediately, the Democrats would have won last November's elections. Or lost them so badly that there would be no doubt about the feelings of Americans on the subject. There was an exemption in the law that allowed states to go with their own system, also.
I know the system in Massachusetts is in big trouble, mainly because people like Dottie's brother doesn't make enough year round to get insurance, so he has to just pay the fine.
It's becoming clearer and clearer that the half-way proposal that was passed is unpopular, overly expensive, and not sweeping enough. Just as an example, since it passed, almost 15,000,000 more people in the U.S. now are without health insurance, insurance costs are rising faster than ever, and more and more companies are getting waivers and exceptions to the law.
