Trouble with Ports...

Lately when I post pics from my camera, the USB cord won't fit into the port on the front of the computer, finally it pulled from the USB the little black chip on the tip of it. It is now stuck in the computer. The same thing happened to my printer USB cord, has anyone ever had the problem with the little black chip falling out? I am having a professional who makes house calls coming in tomorrow but I was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem.

I use the front ports because it's easier to plug in the camera instead of putting in the back of the computer all the time but now I'm having this problem. Hopefully this is nothing serious, the computer works fine tho.

I don't really have a solution for you. It's just a combination of products being made cheaply, used a lot, and likely that you're a tad rougher with them than you think. (easy to do when so much stuff is cheap junk now) All you can do is be more careful and make sure everything is lined up well.

I've been lucky and never bent or broken any sort of connector and I've built several computers - putting cpus in always makes me a tad nervous. Of course this doesn't mean it will never happen to me.

Thanks for your input. I am now anxiously waiting for one of the Geek Squad to come knocking at my door. I hope I don't need new ports cuz I will have to pay extra for any parts I need. Oh well, thank goodness I received my tax return already, looks like it came just in time

They should able to replace it since that's just part of the case that then plugs into the motherboard. I can't imagine it would cost much. Were I close I'd scrap one off an old case and replace it for you.

If it were a back port it would take a separate piece that hooks onto the board (depending on the board) or would require new ports soldered in if they're attached directly to.

I was told by one of the techs that if this problem is too expensive, I could go out and buy a USB extension cord. You can plug it into one of the back ports and you can buy one that has mulitple ports. I checked it out on Google and saw they aren't very expensive at all. Some had two ports and even four ports that can be used and can sit right on your desk after being plugged in the back. That's a thought if this problem is way to expensive.

By the way they never showed up yesterday, they called me and said they were just too back logged so one of the tech's is supposed to come today between 3 and 5pm. Hopefully it's a simple fix and yeah, it would be nice if we lived closer :-).

I hate it when you're waiting for someone to come and they don't. At least you got a call.

We had our lateral sewer line partially plug up (roots in orangeburg - the orangeburg needs to be replaced soon ) and needed it snaked. I called the plumber, and called, and called and called... They never did show up or call back. It took my FIL who knows the owner to actually say something to him.
We also had to have our 46" tv's screen replaced last year... that was fun waiting on.

But yes, the cord is an option. I'm not sure if it will be an issue for you to restart with it in... my OS doesn't like that, but your's may be fine. I don't know if they'll do it, but you could ask that they bring a cord with them and if the repair will be too much trouble (and cost) just pay for the cord.

The tech just left and the ports in the front of the computer are shot BUT he noticed I had two more ports on the side of the monitor and asked me if I had a cord that makes those ports work. I looked where I keep all my computer stuff and found that cord which he connected to the back of the monitor and it works fine. Now I won't bother with the front ports at all, it's just as easy to use the ones on the side of the monitor. He also took apart the computer and gave it a good vacuuming which it never has had. Everything works ok now. I won't even need to buy a port extension since I have enough ports right now so I'm happy with the outcome.

Thank you for your input which is always appreciated

Inside or outside of the computer? If he vacuumed the inside, the motherboard, processor heatsink, and PSU the guy should have been slapped! Ugh!

Never ever vacuum the inside of a computer. Vacuums build up static electricity, static will destroy a motherboard. I really hope they're not hiring techs stupid enough to do this. This is what the canned "air" is for.

I'm glad you had some easy to access ports. In the future get a get a can of "air" and pop the side of your PC open every couple of months and blow the dust out. Unplug the power cord first, of course.
