*sigh* The geese are back

Yesterday I thought I heard them, but tonight I'm sure I heard them.

I live on the bank of a river and when I first moved here there were ducks that nested on the river bank outside my building. Some years ago some geese showed up and there was a turf war with the geese winning. I thought it was only for that year, but year after year they return to nest.

They are so loud. They never sleep. They fight and fight!

It means lots of sleepless nights in the future until after the ducklings hatch and they fledge!

Oh boy! We can hear them at night here when they are migrating. There are several ponds and things in the area; so sometimes it sounds like we are surrounded!! Glad they are not quite as close to me as they are to you! I'd want to start hunting... (Not really; though people do hunt them near here and the sound always sends chills up and down my spine...)

They kept me awake most of last night, as did Katie looking out the window trying to see what was making all of that racket! Her and Spencer were clambering all over each other trying to get the best seat at the window, despite the window having the same view no matter where they sat!

I love geese. We have a pair that raises their babies every year in our back yard and pond.

A pair is so different than a whole flock. These ones are always screeching at each other, and fighting. Not to mention that I think they bark because they were sure making a huge ruckus yesterday at the guys building the sandbag dike behind our building.

I don't have geese near my home, but I have a couple of clients that live near a very large pond and I walk their dogs mid-day. My biggest issue with the geese is trying to avoid all of the goose droppings and some of the droppings are HUGE. Also, Tuffy, a very large Pug mix, love to try to eat the goose poop. Makes for quite an interesting goose poop dodging walk.

We have a flock that come back here and land in our yard and pond. Sometimes they spend days. Walk around our pond with lots of caution.
I guess living in Canada, geese are just a part of it.

No pics.

A couple years ago when I had finished a day shift I was waiting for my ride to come. The hospital I worked at was on the banks of the Red River, and the door I was waiting at was on the river side. I was sitting on the loading dock and saw 2 geese walking around a building into the parking lot. They roamed around and were coming in my direction so I sat quietly watching. They got within about 3 car lengths from where I was.

I couldn't believe how BIG they were! They were as tall as some of the cars in the parking lot, and taller than some others. They roamed around a bit more, tried to get into a screened area but failed, and then started on their way back in which they had come, back to the river. I really wished I had a camera that day.

They were beautiful, but I could also see that they could probably do a great deal of injury with those beaks/bills of theirs.
