excessive drooling?!

I was away for the weekend, and while I was gone my husband called and said our 4 year old Maine Coon was excessively drooling out of nowhere, starting yesterday AM. He said otherwise he was eating and acting normally. I just got home a few minutes ago and he had huge strands of drool hanging from both sides of his mouth. It didn't smell and his gums look fine, so dental infection is unlikely. Also very unlikely that he could have eaten anything poisonous since he's indoor only and cleaning products are locked away.
Is it possible he was just exhibiting stress because I was away for 2 days? If he's still doing it tomorrow we'll call the vet.
I read something online about drooling being a sign of liver problems.
He's also had soft stools recently, which we assumed was a switch of kibble, but I suppose they could be related...
Poor Samson...
Has anyone ever had this before?

Also not sure if this is relevant, but he was diagnosed with mild cardiomyopathy last year but has been symptom free

Could he have eaten some type of food that caused this. Is he eating and drinking? I think I would want to take him to be seen by the vet just to be sure he is okay. Excessive drooling is not normal.

I am sure you will want to bring your cat to your vet asap tomorrow. I can't offer any other advice other than that. My concern is the cardiomyopathy and related symptoms. Could also be a problem with the teeth or mouth tissues. for you furbaby.

Most often drooling is caused by a dental problem or a throat infection/sore throat.
But just for information here is an article that covers everything

I would also strongly recommend getting an appointment for a vet visit first thing tomorrow morning unless by then the drooling has stopped completely.

Seems to have slowed or stopped at this point. He went to the vet today and he didn't find anything wrong with him, just said to call if it starts up again. Strange...
