Strange fur loss on ears - what could it be?

My single, indoor, neutered male cat is about 1 1/2 years old. Apparently overnight he has lost a lot of fur around the edges of both ears. That was a few days ago. He is still playful, eating and as content as ever. He's not a big fan of bathing himself, and I see no changes there so I doubt he rubbed the fur off himself.

What could the issue be? Has anyone experienced this with a young cat? He did knock over a fish tank the other day ago and as we were trying to save a poor frog we had to yell at our cat to get him to go away. He's never been yelled at in his little pampered furry life.

Could the situation have stressed him out so bad that the fur on his ears fell out?

Welcome to TCS!

Unfortunately we're not able to diagnose things over the internet, as it could be any of a number of things.

When someone mentions hairloss of any scale my immediate thought it "ringworm". It can present on the ears as one of the more common places, but I've seen enough ringworm show up in the oddest places & not look like "typical ringworm" to be suspicious of any/all hairloss being ringworm.

I'd advise making a vet appt to have your vet check it out to be sure it isn't something serious. Medical problems are alway easier to treat if caught early.

We've had this one before, too. (I guess wemanaged to have quite a few weird issues in such a short period...)

Kittica lost hair around the tips of her ears within the first few weeks of moving in with us. Ringworm was the first diagnosis, but it was dismissed (we did both the ultrawhichever light test and culture sample). She was using some antifungal cream for a couple weeks and everything went back to normal.

I'd take the cat to the vet, of course, to be on the safe side.

Welcome to the site!!
. Just take your kitty to the vet. Might be possible ringworm, as we had a kitten at the shelter recently that showed the ringworm only on the tips of the ears. Could be other issues as well. Good luck with your kitty!!!!!
