can u recommend a good scale

I want to start tracking weight but as I look at the baby scales I find it hard to imagine him even *fitting* in the bucket type ones let alone staying in them. And some of the "flat" ones don't seem to get good reviews.

Those of you who track, what scale did you buy? TIA

Spring has sprung and everybody is having garage sales. Some of those people have decided they are not having any more babies and you can find a surprising amount of baby scales at garage sales. At least I did. Five bucks after a little haggling. I keep track of my cats' weight because I feed them 24/7 and so far that has worked out well although Alley has put on some weight. If she gains one more pound I am faced with how to allow Persi 24/7 access but not Alley.

Invest in a good accurate digital scale for yourself that measures in fractions of a pound, and when you want to measure your cat, just pick him up and subtract the difference.

Perhaps not as cheap, but you'd get more utility out of it, as everyone needs a good scale.

We purchased this scale and are very happy with it.

I use a old deli scale I got for nothing off a business closing, it weighs up to 30 pounds I think and is plenty big for a cat to stand on.

Do the cats really stand still long enough for an accurate measurement? Hmmm...

This isn't the one that I have, but my sister says she likes this one:

Accurate to 0.2lbs increments, which should be sufficient for our kitties I would think. The 0.1lb ones like I have are quite a bit more pricey. This is the most affordable .1lb one I can find: http://www.amazon.com/Soehnle-63530-...441639&sr=1-43

Thanks for the suggestions! I had not considered that "human" scales came in smaller increments than 1 lb. (Not sure I want to know my own weight in that much detail - eek!) I definitely liked the price of the Eat Smart one though!

The Zieis looks nice too. I hadn't really expected he would stand still for long - unless of course I put a treat on the scale - in which case he would do ANYTHING to get to that. Bribing him with food just seems wrong but it works . . .

Human scale doesn't work at all. At least for us. It's off up to a couple pounds.

(Not on its own, it's perfectly accurate when I weigh myself. But when I pick up the cat and she moves just a tiny bit while I hold her, the sclae shows different value. And then it changes every time I hop back on.)

My cat stands still, it's a big scale so I just set her up there, the ferrets I lure to stay on with fish oil.

Its simply a poor quality scale then. My Tanita has 100% reproducible results, although I have not compared its accuracy with any other medical scales, you will get the same measurement ten times in a row with or without the cat.

The reason I figured out that holding them worked better is because I tried just standing Buttercup on the scale, but I don't know if its just cold or what, but she instantly walks right off and if you try ti block her with your arms just squirms or jumps. Ugh... and a good scale will take an average over a period of time.

The vet was also not able to get a good measurement for the same reason, as she kept trying to get off the table and hide under the bench.

Thinking about it though, I bet just using a small towel when they are extra sleepy might help.... hmmmm....

I was keeping my cats' weight monthly with this Tanita scale; works PERFECT:

You may find it cheaper on eBay. I would always put a blanky down first - it doesn't count the blanket's weight, or whatever you put on it. Superb accuracy.

(I can't believe I sold it, but was close to homelessness at the time - my permanent disability came through at the last second, after I sold a lot of my things (I guess glad I had the things to sell).

Warmly,

Julie O'

I also have the Zieis scale. I have great luck with the scale and have used it often for my own cats and fosters.
